# Altmill keep disconnecting from computer

Hi. My mill keeps disconnecting from my computer. It is connected via USB. Which ethernet cable will work? Is it a special one. I just have been reading that might be the problem. But, it is useless if I can’t run more than a 20 minute program.
I am using gsender, a dedicated PC, and Altmill 4x4

Any Ethernet cable should do as long it has the right ends on it.

I don’t think that is a requirement these days. Every Ethernet connection is self-adjusting and should work with either a straight cable or a crossover cable. Having said that, I haven’t seen a crossover cable for a long time (not that I have looked).
Edit: just checked Amazon and yes, you can still buy a crossover cable … who knew …
Well, if @GPeak bought an Ethernet cable that did not explicitly say ‘crossover’ in the description, he will receive a straight cable.

any ethernet cable will work. I’m using thin profile one about 8 feet as my computer is mounted on right leg. works without issues. Just don’t forget to enable ethernet in the settings of gsender and assign 192.168.5.x (not .1) ip to your computer’s ethernet port. also if your usb disconnects after 20 minutes, turn off power management on usb

As I previously posted, I was having issues with my Almill disconnecting also. I changed all my Windows settings but to no avail. Since my laptop doesn’t have a n Ethernet port I didn’t have that as an option unless I got a USB adapter. However, I found out that it was the USB cable that appeared to be the issue. The cable I was using was a USB-C at the controller and USB-A at the PC. When I changed to a high speed USB-C on both ends, I haven’t had a problem since. Even leaving it on O/N is not an issue, it remains connected. Maybe someone knows why, but I’m not complaining.

I haven’t hooked up the ethernet cable yet. It’s weird, I have left on the Altmill and computer since I started this thread. And, it has not disconnected once. I don’t know. But, I will hook up the ethernet just in case. Thank you all for the replies

So I hooked up the ethernet cable, but it won’t let me connect. Is there a setting or configuration I need to adjust for using the ethernet cable? Thank you all

Hi Gpeak,
I believe just connecting a eth cable isnt enough to make the magic happen.
Have you followed the manual about setting up ethernet?

if you purchase an ethernet cable with male ends on each end, you should be good. I also had a problem with my usb disconnecting and since i went to ethernet, no disconnects have occured!

USB is not really designed for noisy environments on top of that the quality of USB cables varies greatly especially on Amazon.
