# Altmill on casters?

How feasible is it to mount an Altmill on casters? More to the point, will I need to re-align the mill after a move? Would I need to re-surface my spoil board in order to eliminate any table twist caused by the mill legs to be ever so slightly at different heights?
I have VERY limited space and I suspect that I will have to access the mill from the sides of the machine at times due to it’s size. This will require moving the machine. I might be able to arrange for a couple of feet of free space on one side but in order to access from the other side I would need to then shift the entire machine over.
Am I over-thinking this? Is there little or no concern about the table twisting if the floor is slightly uneven?

I use a leveling caster on most of my tools. They have a base that comes down past the wheel which locks it in place but also helps to level your machine. Just search “leveling casters” on Amazon.

That was one kind of caster I was thinking of. I wouldn’t want the whole thing starting to move. My main concern though is twisting.
Most of my tools are on casters as well but none of them is really that sensitive to alignment.

Yeah they work great. No alignment issues. I still have to put a rack on the legs of the altmill to steady the unit but even then nothing gets out of whack.

I’d like to use something like this as well. My machine isn’t here yet, but I’d like to get the casters ordered… the question is, what size is the hole in the leg where the stock feet get mounted? Thanks in advance.

The casters I ended up getting, HOLKIE Leveling Stem Casters from Amazon.ca, came with two sizes of center post, 1/2” and 12 mm. I ended up using the 12 mm posts and needed to drill out the leg holes a tiny bit.

Thats almost like the ones I use, I got the “thumb wheel” (which hurts by the way) and tack welded them on. Painted them black to match and she’s been good to go ever since!

I specifically did not want the thumb wheel variety because I could foresee issues with adjusting the height …. and it was a good thing because some of the adjustments would probably have been too difficult to do with the thumb wheel.

Sorry this is almost a year later, what size are the wholes on the legs to start? And I am guessing you just put a nut on the end and didn’t weld the nut to the the legs? Thanks!

@LightBurnSupport FWIW, those appear to be the legs on the Altmill Mk1. The Mk2 legs have a different shape and hole placement. Ask me how I know 🤔
That said, the hole on the bottom for the levelers or casters is likely the same.

I just drilled them out a bit bigger for the caster bolt to fit.

I found these on Amazon. Oe end of the stud is 12mm and fits in the casters I bought while the other end is 10mm and fits in the hole in the Altmill legs.

Since I’m taller than average I tend to like all my work surfaces higher off the ground. When I got my AltMill 4x4 a few months ago I bought some 6" locking casters. I was able to level everything when I was installing them by adjusting the locking nuts on the stem. My shop floor is fairly flat and I always run my CNC in the same location - it’s just on casters to a) make it higher, and b), make it easy to move if I need to get around it for some reason.
