Hello,

I am interested in any recommended starting point for feed and speed rate for the Extra Long Roughing Bit sold here:

> **[1/4″ Extra Long Flat Roughing End Mill – 1/4″ Shank-3F | Sienci Labs](https://sienci.com/product/1-4-extra-long-flat-roughing-endmill/)**
>
> This 1/4" Extra Long Flat Roughing End Mill - 1/4" Shank-3F is specially designed for fast material removal, making it ideal for raw lumber. This end mill offers 1.75" cutting flute length, 3.5" overall length, and 3 serrated flutes, allowing for...

For use with the Altmill, hardwood like oak or maple. With 3 flutes should I really just send it at 1.5x the feed rate of a normal 2-flute bit for the same chip load?

If you go to the page you have Linked and scroll down, you will find other links. Go to

There is also another informative page Feed and Speed Help Tips
If it doesn’t cover length in the chart then I would go for conservative feed rates, better to take an hour longer on your part than to break a bit…. at least until you start optimising the feeds and speeds for it.

Usual preface, I’m with PreciseBits. So while I try to only post general information take everything I say with the understanding that I have a bias.

I went into it a couple times. Short version it get’s complicated due to the stickout of the tool (amount “sticking out” of the collet). If you want my best guesses and why:

> [@Sienci Tool Database (up to date)](https://forum.sienci.com/t/sienci-tool-database-up-to-date/12468):

> Hi there, I was wondering if there is some place we can download the complete Sienci endmills tool database for Fusion? I was notably trying to find a one including the 1/4″ Extra Long Flat Roughing End Mill. Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Shorter summery:

> Hey slovdahl. Sorry about the thread divergence. It’s partially addressed in my first reply. To summarize it, tools that stick that much out of the collet have to be run less aggressively. They are like for like more prone to deflecting (bending). The only “not like” part I can confirm on them other than the lengths is that they are a chip broken flute. That will “reduce” “some” of the deflection as you are not keeping flute engagement through the whole length (depending on crossover location a…

Hope that’s useful. Let me know if there’s something I can help with.

Thank you @TDA , this is the sort of info I am looking for. I’ll take some time to go through it and digest, and let you know what I end up with, or if I still have questions.
