Still have lines in carve

O.K. I am still battling with the lines appearingat variousintervals in my carvings. I have done all the maintenance and replacement of parts that i know to do. I have the Longmill mark 1. Could this be the x axis stepper motor missing steps. Sincerely, Michael levine.

@mike2 It’s doubtful that it’s the X motor, but nothing is for sure. What CAD/CAM are you using? If VCarve, does it look good in the preview? If VCarve, post your .crv file, if you like.

Thanks for hollerin back at me becausethis issue is still persisting. I use carveco and gsender. Everything looks good in all previews. Replaced delryn wheels and have performed maint. on machine and everything looks good. How does one know if the stepper motors are loseing a step. Michael levine.

I was just in the settings of gsender and found the machine set to longmill mark 2.5 so I changed to longmill mark 1 which is my machine. Do you think that that would have been the issue?? Michael levine.

That looks like a backlash issue.

Well I did hink that it could be but, I replaced about 2 years ago with the t8 spring loaded anti backlash nuts. But I just did order new and will be here in a few days. So you don’t think that it was the gsender machine being set wrong??

@mike2 I have no experience with Carveco. I assume that this is a 3D model carving??? What tool are you using for the finishing carve and what is the stepover?

I am an experienced cnc carving guy. I use various sizes in tapered ball nose and of course the step over is various depending on the bit I use. This issue is occurring on all different bits and stepovers.

@mike2 Understood. I expect that you are much more experienced than I am. I’m sure that you will work it out.

Well, do you know anybody in technical issues at scenci labs that you can put me in contact with??

So this may be totally irrelevant but when I did 3D carves on my original Longmill MK1 I experienced lines somewhat similar to what I see in your photos. Turns out it happened when I was leaning on the machine to watch the machine working. It was enough change is the movement of the machine/rigidity to create those lines.

I also saw something similar if I paused a job for the night and restarted in the morning and the material had changed due to moisture/temperature but that was typically just one change in z and not the up and down seen in your images.

Hope that helps

Andre

@mike2 I don’t know anyone specifically. You can open a support ticket and a tech will address it.

Thank you Andre, I do on occasion lean on the table to look at the carving. So maybe. My new backlash nuts are arriving on monday. I have had this machine for 5 years now and it has seen alot of carving. So much so that the rails are pitted somewhat. Thought about turning the rails upside down and giving that a try also. Thanks very much for weighing in on this matter. I will keep you posted on progress with the issue. Thanks, Michael levine.

I also use Carveco and always cut 45deg to the wood grain and will sometimes get these lines. As the image is carving it will skip a section because of it’s location and go back to it later in the cut and that’s when I will get a line. It’s almost like the Z depth starts a little off. my lines are much smaller that what I see in these images. The bits I’m using are 0.75mm down to 0.25mm Tapered ball nose with a 10% step over.

Well now, I thought I was the only one that this had ever happened to. Mine appear in the run but, not skipped and come back to. It’s like it’s cutting perfect and at various intervals the z skips up a notch and then comes back down and continues. Trying to pinpoint a pattern but it’s random. I have the entire machine broken down for maint. New anti backlash nuts and m5x10 washers on the delryn wheels and of course a great cleanup. Should have it all back together by wenesday. Thanks for shouting out at me. Will keep you posted…Michael levine.

@mike2 Since you are now thinking that the issue may be Z axis related, you may want to look at both the pulley and the belt on the Z gantry.

Replaced the belt a short time ago so all good there.I am also replacing the z axis lenear bearings just to be sure. thanks, michael levine.

are the lines vertical or horizontal or at an angle?

Mark

Mark, they appear randomly at the same angle that I am carving. I think that i might have a handle on it now with the replacement of delryn wheels and washers, z axis linear rail bearings and anti baklash nuts. I am doing carves now to see if I have eliminated the issue. Michael levine.

Well everyone, it is now virtualy a new machine and all the lines have all but disappeared. I am back to making perfectly beautiful carves.
