Vortex chess piece

have altmill with vortex addition. tried to make first run chess piece. Have vcarve pro and downloaded Queen stl file. Using vortex post processor to make gcode. The chess piece shows up on gcode but when it starts to carve it immediately cuts straight down into dowel about to the middle and then rotate cuts , 1/4 turn of dowel and then shuts down stating hits hard limit. It does not leave a rounded base as shown in directions. Using 1.62 g sender. Also have 1.5 spindle.

@batr54 In VCarvePro, where did you set your Z0? Same question for gSender. It’s likely that you have set them in different locations.

Z0 set for center of dowel in Vcarve pro. In gSender Z0 was set by auto Z0 off main rotary chuck.

@batr54 So, the easy solution is out.

I can take a look at the .crv file if you like. No guarantees, but maybe something will jump out at me. Otherwise, you may want to post the .crv file to the Vectric users forums.

Back at it. If i do a roughing cut it leaves me with a tab on each end of chess piece. Then when I add finish cut the tool path starts by cutting off the piece at the base before doing the rest of the carve. Game over. In the demonstration video there is no mention of placing tabs on this cut. I tried a tab and it sort of worked. The crv file is now uploaded.

queen29.crv (1.9 MB)

@batr54 I deleted the duplicate copy of the file.

I also deleted your duplicate topic. Please don’t post duplicates of the same issue.

Since you have added tabs and now have it working, can I close this file as resolved?
The file has no tabs holding the piece, so it’s not surprising that the finishing toolpath would cut it off. The roughing leaves it connected because you selected Z level roughing. When I changed that to raster, just to see what it would do, the holding material was gone, just as it is with your finishing toolpath.
WRT to your first post, now that I have seen the file, it is doing exactly what it should be doing. As there are no tabs, and since the finishing toolpath is always 1 carve to max depth - that is, the bit’s depth of cut in the tool database is ignored - I would expect it to cut to the centre of the model.
