Hi,

If i change to different style chuck for rotary axis that is same 80mm diameter but shorter will probing work correctly or not?

Thanks 🙏🍻

Would really be helpful to know more about this topic since i can’t find any documentation about it

Hey Dinko,

As far as I can see, I don’t see a problem with using another chuck, given it will fit the axis perfectly. It’s just a clamp doing nothing but turn.

Please note I don’t own a vortex, so it’s a bit of speculation for me too.

More info on the vortex is found here:

Here you can look at the cad render. It might give info you need.

Whoops, that’s another rabit hole I am digging out. Here is the cad

@Dinko I’ve moved your question to the rotary axis category.

I can’t see an issue since the probing does not account for the length of the chuck, only it’s diameter.
Please report back it you change the chuck. I’m looking to do the same thing. The chuck that is on it is not really a wood holding chuck and since I have wood holding chucks for my lathes, I’d like to change it out. I simply have not found a good way to mount it yet.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers, I’m concerned only about the diameter probing, since it can’t be 100% correct can I change default values in the firmware or touch the probe on part of the original Vortex Rotary carrier plate?

Chuck in question is this one:

Type: Collet Chuck
Model: ER40UM
Mounting: 7 holes
Diameter: D80 (approx. 80 mm / 3.15 inches)
Accuracy: 0.005mm
Material: Carbon steel
Hardness: 45-50HRC

@Dinko I suggest that you ask Sienci about the probing code to see how to edit it if you need to. IMHO, that chuck style is not well suited to the rotary, unless you will always be starting with round stock/dowels. I have a collet chuck like that for my small lathe and it is very good for round blanks. It does not work at all for square material.

@gwilki Yes I know, this is for a totally different project than standard wood turning, as I’m turning around metal shaft that is surrounded by wood and I need very accurate precision on both ends.

Thanks for the suggestion, do you mean I should contact tru support or here, I already tried support for other LongMill stuff but a non-tehnical person replied and didn’t know the basic answers that are in the manual, so not sure if it will work for this question 😃

I used another 3 jaw chuck that is a bit bigger (79mm) but haven’t tried probing on carrier plate yet, just tried if it fits correctly.

Another view of the chuck with collet, here you can see why I upgraded to collet chuck, this was just a test to see if it works:

@Dinko It looks like a nice setup. For the probing info, I suggest going to [Sienci.com](http://Sienci.com) and opening a support ticket.

@gwilki thanks, will report back if I get the answer, and next week I will test if the probing the carrier plate works 🍺😊
