Little help. I have a vortex rotary with a splitter between the Altmill SLB and the vortex. The genie popped out of my vortex stepper motor. Not in use. Just sitting on the shelf. Control board was off. Haven’t used the vortex fora few months now.
Heard it pop and watched the smoke rise… thought it was an aged battery charger for my drill, at first…
Definitely the stepper. Extremely hot to the touch. I’m placing an order for a new stepper, but wondering how to prevent it again. Thanks.
That power splitter is not used for the SLB-ext. It is used for the SLB. @Jens is mistaken, though. It is used for the close-loop motor. It’s just not used with the SLB-ext (Altmill).
I sit corrected. I guess I made an assumption when @Keithleatherwood said that he hadn’t used the Vortex for a few months and that he used the splitter when he hooked it to the Altmill. I don’t recall when exactly the closed loop stepper motor for the Vortex became available but I didn’t think they had been around for very long so my brain said ‘must be open loop’.
I’ll fade back into the hedge now (‘The Simpsons ‘ reference if you have a puzzled look on your face)
All very helpful to me. Thank you both. Learned some stuff today for sure. Closed Loop/Open Loop, SLB/SLBext and settings in gsender….I’m thinking in conclusion the splitter is not for use in my configuration.
Today was the first time, since the genie escaped, I’ve tried to run a standard xyz file and the Altmill failed to respond to input commands with the splitter connected. Once I removed the splitter the Altmill ran fine in xyz. Once I source a replacement stepper, I’ll try again. Note to self….Vortex stepper should not be hot when not in use?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
