DIP switches control how much your machine moves by each signal or electrical pulse that the motor drivers receive (ie. microstepping). The control board comes preset with the correct microstepping, however in rare occasions the switches can be jostled and moved.
If they are not set properly your machine will not move the proper distance, which can cause skewing of the Y-axis and cause inaccurate cutting. You can refer to this article to see how to adjust your DIP switches.
