Altmill 1/2" collet

I will probably see if I can get a dedicated nut to reduce the hassle factor. I haven’t decided if I want to go cheap and cheerful(not used that often) or if I want to get a precision nut.

Not too sure where this question should be posted in the forum.

I have added the SIENCI spindle to my Longmill and have no problems with it, works great. About the only thing I did was lower some feed rates due to the added weight (mass) of the spindle vs the Makita router.

My question is there a SIENCI part number for a replacement collet locking nut? The nut has this information on it, H M, M19X1, ER16A and uses a 22MM wrench

Can the replacement nut and replacement 1/8”, 1/4” and 3/8” collets be added to the SIENCI extra parts store? Also, since collets wear out, gripping hole gets polished and does not hold the shaft correctly, they are considered a maintenance item.

The reason I am asking is that I would like to not only have a spare nut, but also to be able have a 1/8” collet in one and a 1/4” collet in another to make it more convenient when changing bits during a project. I did find a replacement nut that would work except it uses a 25mm wrench and I would like to not add that confusion when changing bits.

Make sure to get all the sawdust out of your collet every time you swap out a mill (router bit…). The best way is to push it out with you thumb; if you disassemble the two parts every time, you’ll find you can do so with very little effort.

That is what I am doing now and it works well.

I just ordered one from Amazon.ca

Breaking news!
I ordered this 12.7mm collet insert from Amazon.ca. After inserting it into the collet nut (jamb nut?), I attempted to insert a 1/2" shank router bit. The hole in my collet nut wasn’t large enough to allow the bit to be inserted. I tried other, equally high quality bits, but they too couldn’t be inserted.
I have the Sienci Labs 1.5 kw spindle, just in case anyone else is interested.
I’m returning the piece to Amazon.ca for a refund.

@ApexWoodworks Marty: I wonder if the issue is that the largest collet size that is specced for an ER16 collet is 10mm or 3/8". As you have shown, larger ones are available, but from my reading, they are out of spec. ER20 collets are for 1/2" mills.

FWIW, here is a good chart setting out the ER specs

https://littlemachineshop.com/info/er_collet_sizes.php

FWIW, the 1/2" collet that I bought did not fit 1/2" bits before some minor adjustment. IIRC, I needed to do some very minor sanding on the edge of the hole in the collet nut. It was really extremely minor and just expanded the nut hole by a tiny fraction of a mm.
I should point out however that the collet appears very fragile to me. The ‘fingers’ are very thin. OK for very rare occasions but not a day to day use item.
