Altmill 1/2" collet

If anyone else was wondering, there is a 1/2" er16 collet available. I found it on Temu

Have you tried it/tested yet?

I second this. I’m curious because this collet size shouldn’t exist.

I just tried the 1/2" collet and got it to work. The vernier callipers have the bits at 12.6mm and the hole in the threaded collet at 12.5mm. I just took some 280 silicon carbide paper and sander the hole for 10 sec.

I would be concerned about the strength/thickness of the collet ‘fingers’ and how it will last. Also, are you saying you ‘sanded’ a precision collet surface ???
On the other hand, I suppose that a company that tries to stick square peg into a round hole might not care too much about runout. All this is of course with me not having seen this collet and not having measured it’s runout.
YMMV

Expecting my ALTMILL to be shipped within the next 2 weeks. I found while browsing in ALI EPRRESS a ER16 collet with a diameter of 12.7mm. Do the metric conversion and you will find
that 12.7mm is .500 Imperial. It is in transit and cost $8.61 CDN. shipping included. Looking
forward to test it and report back.

Thanks for posting the link - I am too curious to pass this up and ordered one.

Collets take a large amount of abuse from the blasts of dust and wood particles especially from up-cut endmills. I try to keep them clean with a regular blast from and air hose and a soft tissue to clean the collet seat in the spindle. It makes me more confident the cutter won’t drift down.

I’m game - Just ordered - would be nice to be able to utilized my small collection of 1/2" shank bits and not need to purchase new ones.

That’s cool, Laurence! Please let us know how well the 1.5kw spindle handles 1/2" collet bits… as I have a sneaking suspicion you’ll be using larger diameter bits from now on. (At least I would, LoL)

That’s awesome, I found a ER 20 collet chuck on Amazon that has 8mm shank that I was planning to use with a 2" surfacing tool but I think this would be much better.

Just milled this small slab of walnut with a 2" Dia. bit using the new 1/2" collet. No problem. Ran it at 12000rpm and 1500mm/min.
Also just set up my 5hp vacuum, so this was the first using that also. Works great, just need to make some pods for more different applications.

That’s awesome. Mine delivered yesterday but have not had an opportunity to break it in yet. Glad to know it works!

Hey just picked up the ER 16 for the 1/2 collet. Tried sanding with a 220. Can’t get the bit in with gouging or taking a small grinder to it. How is it going for you And you 1/2 bits. Feels like bit may make its way down a little. Just curious.

It’s working fine for me. I did find that some bits with marks and/or scrapes would not fit through the nut as it is a close fit. I just carefully sanded the shanks smooth.

I received my 1/2" collet a few days ago but have not had the need or opportunity to use it yet.

Just a word of caution about using any collet larger than the 3/8" one that comes from Sienci Labs, and that is to be very careful when using large cutting mills. I can imagine someone putting a 2" diameter surfacing mill just because they have a 1/2" collet, then running it at the same speeds as with a 22mm diameter surfacing mill. Ouch!!
