Altmill with new vortex wiring probe

Where, on the super long board ext, do I plug the probe for the vortex?
Most of the instructions/videos are for the long mill and that one answer eludes me.

Also, while I’ve got your attention, which of these numbers is correct?

Thanks!

The banana plug that normally plugs into your probe puck plugs into the opposite side of the vortex headstock opposite side from the chuck. The magnet attaches to your router/spindle collet and the other end of the probe wire stays connected to your controller (longboard or superlong board).

Thanks jpnharris, but it was the ā€œconnected to controllerā€ part that had me down. There is a probe plug on the right end of the SLBEXT that came with my Altmill. Ten bucks says that’s it. I’ll take it up again in the morning when it ain’t so hot (100 in the shade with a fan blowing). Now I’m about to get a tool setter, and where do I… never mind, we’ll cross that bridge after coffee.

Bonus points for the $103 setting! Anybody?

@RobLM Set $103 to 79.0123

I guess I assumed you were using a touch probe. If not, then the probe from your vortex plugs into the probe plugs into your controller just below the SD card slot and the pendent plug. If you are using a touch probe, use the same wire you are using for that with your vortex.

Thanks, I went with the zero from the video, then corrected it from the text, then corrected it again, and I’ll have to double check in the morning. So what you’re saying is, we didn’t need all them decimal places.

@RobLM definitely put in the full number of 79.012345679 since that will ensure the Vortex is dead accurate. Thanks for pointing out the issue with the mismatch with the picture, @StephenCampbell will get to updating that once he gets the chance. Also, you’re right that it’s the plus at the front of the board labelled as ā€˜Probe’ to get you up and running :+1:

@chrismakesstuff @StephenCampbell Thanks for the clarification. Just an FYI, firmware and flashing section for the SLB still shows $103= 79.01234568

Fixed that now, thanks Grant

@chrismakesstuff Tks much, Chris. I just entered the full value for $103 in both the firmware GUI page and console. I entered 79.012345679. In both instances, the new value of $103 was truncated to 79.012.
This is in version 1.4.12. Is this addressed in 1.5.1?

So this is actually an interesting quirk of grbl and grblHAL firmware - which is that it’s possible to send them a very specific value like 79.012345679 and it’ll actually register that on the firmware side, but if you then ask the firmware what value it’s holding then it’ll only ever report back up to 3 decimal places. This will make it look like it doesn’t have the full value even though it does - I hope that makes sense

@chrismakesstuff It is interesting - and a bit annoying. :grinning_face: So, it really means that there is no way to determine what value it is actually holding. It’s not a big deal, obviously. Tks much, C, for the clarification.

Thanks all for putting the hornets back in the hive after I kicked it. I’ll re-enter that full number.
(FYI, I did run a sample chess piece and the Vortex is all I had hoped for)
