Earlier this year, Huaco, the dog of a friend passed away, and she was devistated. I went straight to the longmill and designed her a tribute to let her know her pain was felt. It’s a good slab of teak with the silhouette of the dog turned into an stl to create some depth into the project.
I tried to keep it simple, but the depth had me doing multiple laser etchings with different cutouts to compensate for the depth I created in the material, causing the laser to gradually lose focus. It was a messy job, and the only way I could save it was to smear the different etchings into each other by hand. The technical issues with this one are numural, and I regret a few choices made in the process, but they don’t count when you give something like this to someone and the reaction is pure emotion.
Doing tributes is a big part of why I like the longmill so much. Making someone feel better just by doing something you like to do is the best use of my time I can think of.
This is Leo’s dog raised dog bowels. Made from walnut cut offs a friend gave me. What is cool is there are no nails or fasteners in it. I used star bond CA glue along with tite bond 3. Finished with oil based spray polyurethane. He seems to enjoy it!
My LongMill not only cut out the bowel openings, but also the leg design. Used a 90 degree v bit to carve the design on the top. The poodle is an AI generated image. The first time I used AI to generate design.
That’s a great idea. We have a flimsy metal bowl holder you can kick around while cursing the new waterstain in the wooden floor. This idea might find its way to my mill in about
