Hey all. I’m looking to draw with the CNC. I currently have a Genmitsu ProverXL 6060, and I’ve just ordered the Genmitsu CNC Router Drawing Robot Tool. I’ve also ordered an altmill, and I’d like to try some larger scale drawing as well when it arrives (in addition to the standard carving, etc). The Genmitsu tool looks like it attaches by replace the router/spindle, so it likely won’t fit the altmill.
I see IDC Woodcraft recommending the Shark Tooth Drawing Tool, but it seems expensive for what it is. I’m also concerned that their head seems to swivels and wobbles in the video (which IDC suggest using a piece of tape to lock it). Has anyone used this tool? If so, what was your experience? Any cheaper tool that does the job well, or have you tried a more expensive but better tool?
@andrezou Welcome to the group. When you say “draw” do you mean simply drawing designs with a pen or marker? If so, search on the forum. There are lots of designs for pen/marker holders.
Hi Gwilki, I was thinking more along the line of more complex patterns like generative art (not to be confused with art created by AI diffusion models) using a pen or pencil. I tried searching for these tools on the forum, but I could not find much discussion on them other than a brief mention of the two products I listed in my post
@andrezou The two products you mention are nothing more than pen holders. While the Genmitsu model replaces the spindle, the other one mounts in the spindle. Either way, they are just pen holders.
As @gwilki said, there are several posts on this forum on pen holders. Most of them home made with simple parts or a 3D printer. There are commercial versions as well.
This one worked good for me. A little expensive but I bought it before I got my new 3d Printer =). I also just disconnected my spindle when I use it since Aspire 12.5 wont let me use a 0 RPM speed. Works great.
@andrezou I have made 3 different ones with increasing complexity over the years. As soon as I bought a 3D printer, I made the one that @NeilFerreri designed. It’s crazy simple, and works a treat.
Here is one I designed for my little Genmitsu 3018. The blue ring was added when I got my LongMill. I thought it would be good to have a spring in case the surface wasn’t exactly level or I wanted to vary the pressure. It works well enough but I haven’t done anything more complicated than making something for a child to color.
Thanks for the suggestions. For the altmill, I’ll probably try one the design similar to the shark one. Meanwhile, the Genmitsu one arrived and has been working fine so far.
