Do any of you buy those preassembled unfinished craft boxes? Does the cheap thin wood handle carving well? Got a recommended source? Trying to do some low effort gifts.

Hello! In my opinion, they may be a good candidate for laser etching , but they are so thin, I’m not sure how well you could carve on them. Maybe someone else here has a different experience, but those appear to be very similar to the big box stores and at the same price point too. Please let us know if you try them out.

Will do. Ordered a few pencil holders from an amazon seller. Will see. Dont have a laser, yet.
@Jake when you say “same price as big box store”, are you saying there is something better or you saying you can make your own boxes at the same price? Ultimately I am trying to do gifts that I can knock out in one evening. Thx
Here are some results. This a 3x4” pencil holder. The “pine” is about a 1/4” thick.
Labled each tool. One that isnt labeled is a 1/8” tapered bit. That seemed like the winner in smaller print. Not the greatest but it might work for a teacher gift. Will put the school name on the other side. Will find a better font.
Other suggestions?
Dollar General and Walmart sell them for about the same money at least where I live.
