Desk organizer Project

Hello and greetings from my shop to yours! About 2 months ago I had a customer ask me to make name plates for their new office. I did, and they were very pleased with them. Then last week I was asked to make two business card holders and twin trifold brochure holders for one of them. Of course I said yes (haven’t learned to say no). He wanted them attached to the name plate for his desk. I stopped by his office and picked up his name plate and fretted the entire weekend on what it was going to look like and how I was going to incorporate it into an existing piece.

Before you look at the pictures, yea it isn’t perfect. I had to incorporate a few things I had not attempted on my LongMill; pocket cuts and angles. The angles worked out pretty darn well. The pockets were not 100% square to the edges. I also had a strange thing happen. I was cutting the pockets from the same piece of walnut. In vcarve pro, it showed the back pocket cut first. When I carved it, somehow it managed to carve one, but the other one carved ahead and in “air”. I ended up back in the software and just carved the back one. Probably didn’t explain it appropriately but I worked through the problem. I ran them through the table saw to get the 21 degree angle. I used CA glue and tight bond 3 to secure without nails. The back was just some scrap I had which I used the same 21 degree angle on. Once again used CA glue and tight bond 3 to secure. Coated with oil based polyurethane. I am sure he will be very happy with the outcome. Thanks for looking!

Thank you! More to the story. My customer called me and said his business cards wouldn’t fit in the slots and that when they did, it was covering his name. Uggg! So I borrowed a friend’s oscillating saw and cut the quarter inch out of the bottom. Next was to widen the openings. I ended up using a thin piece of wood with sandpaper on it to widen them 1/32 of an inch. What was strange, I used my business cards to make the holder and they fit just fine. His cards were just a tad bit wider, possibly from printing.

Lesson learned, it’s okay to say no. I prefer plaques, signs and now raised dog bowls any day.:joy::laughing::sweat_smile:

There always seems to be something else to consider. As a 35+ year printing industry professional in the US the standard business card size is 3 1/2" wide by 2" tall. Some like a portrait presentation where it would be 2" wide by 3 1/2" tall. Then there are folded business cards were you will want to leave an extra 1/8" somewhere because of the varience in the folding process. Then their are the alternate materials such as plastic or metal cards. Ugh!

I really like how your project turned out.
