I have a full time career at a bank. I make stuff on the side for a little cash. My boss is aware and so are a handful of people at work. I like to keep it that way. Dont need people second guessing my efforts at the bank when they see me post signs and stuff for sale.
I also havent had a social media account in 8 years. I dont miss it! I have however created an inconspicuous FB account and post pics on a business page to sell randomly in Marketplace. I have posted and sold a handful of things in Marketplace but my personal account is super spammy looking. Clearly a fake name with no friends.
Eventhough my FB privacy settings are as limited as possible, my personal page has been found and my friend recommendations show anyone in my phone contact list, including co-workers.
Tips on keeping my two worlds separate if using FB?
Good luckā¦.sucks that marketplace is what everyone uses. I left FB years agoā¦if I want to sell something I use my wifeās account. I have zero desire for social media anymore.
Yep. I thought to bug my wife to do it but I know she will get annoyed with the dumb questions that surface. Might have to entice her with a 10% commission.

Whereas I really donāt care anymore about the social media propaganda, one thing I donāt do when I install any SM apps or accounts is give access to my contacts.
If an app asks for permissions I click no. If it doesnāt ask and I have any suspicion that it ātookā them, I close the account and uninstall.
That said, having a little side business outside of your full-time job should not be an issue so long as YOU maintain the separation.
I have run side businesses for the last 30+ years and my rules are:
- Donāt use Company resources for it (or personal things either) - not their PC, cell phone, printers, anything.
- Donāt discuss āmyā business during ātheirā time. Before/After work, during lunch is okay.
- Make sure my business is in no way, in conflict with their business.
For me it is kind of sad that most companies have a FB, Instagram,ā¦etc and use that as their main contact to their customers. I hate it that I donāt see Sienciās FB page because Iām sure there is some good info I miss. Iāll just stick to the forums because they seem better moderated than most FB groups. I guess that is a little off topic..

Just another marketing stream really - I donāt interact with companies on their social media - nor do I blast or praise them on social media - maybe because Iām an old guy, maybe not.
If I look at a companyās socials, is just to see whatās new with them and if I want to dive deeper into any research. I prefer specific forums like this - or the Discord servers. Less likelihood of trash/junk and usually just other people like me learning and sharing - and hopefully a few experts.

I bet you a dolphin you are what they call genx, or what we used to call normal guys.
Please be aware that somehow genx is now trendy. It is now hip to act, dress and identify as a genx. I am curious though. If they are serious about it, facebook and the likes can close shop, because soon the wannabe generation will figure out that no one is gonna help faster than you can help yourself, and that finding your own route will bring you to places other than your destination, and that creating a fence of posts on the breath taking scenery you encounter after the seventh wrong turn will block the ability to enjoy it. You can spend time only once, and sm is the biggest waste of time in the history and future of waste of times⦠in the univ.. multiverse.
Greetings from a fellow normal guy going on a rant instead of shrugging it off.
Sell your stuff and tell the company to shut it. Youāre not building banks or milling financial advice, are you.
Iāve read your response twice and I must admit, I am still not sure how to take it.
I am Gen X by the definition but I rarely, if ever, use that label to identify myself. Part of my reasoning for calling myself an āold guyā because I grew up without social media and if it were to all shut down today, I would not miss it - that is how little it plays a role in my daily routine.
I was merely commenting in response to @beerbarrel and being supportive (in a way) of companies using SM but stating that I donāt engage in it as it is not my preference.

Actually, Sienci is pretty good in keeping us informed via their blog and the forum. I donāt recall seeing anything on FB that I didnāt see elsewhere.
I hate FB with a passion. Maybe because Iāve been in cyber security too long. I go on FB once in a while and try to steer people to the forum when they have technical questions. FB is probably the last medium Iād use for technical support. But a lot of people post there anyways.
Not sure what platform Iād use if I wanted to sell. None of the SM platforms would be first on my list. Are we all showing our age?

I donāt mind that they use it that way. Itās the way of the future I guess. I, for instance, am an old guy at 66 but I feel youngā¦some daysā¦lol. My biggest beef is how everything gravitates to politics on SM. I like a place that sticks to the subject at hand. Thatās just me. Your mileage may vary.

I sometimes like to peoples projects because it gives me ideas but man sometimes the topics kill me. Iāll never have another fb account that is for sure.
Iād pay for a platform that doesnāt monetize on my personal activities on the Internet (i.e. contacts, cookies, etc)
But I realize that getting your product known requires reaching out to a wide audience. And SM does that well by posting your stuff on someoneās feed based on their Internet searches and/or shared contacts.
We recently adopted two kittens from a shelter that advertise on FB. It didnāt even take an hour for my feed to start getting posts on cat food, cat furniture, cat ladiesā¦
One problem with FB is spam. You have no idea if the seller is legitimate or not. A real craft seller or some mass-produced garbage passed off as craft.

The only thing that I actually miss is the marketplace. There are deals there on occasionā¦
Whitewolf,
I too am an old guy and simply took off. It was not against you nor any one else nor constructed with any safety measures in mind. Sorry I had peeps reading that more than zero times.
I was shaking my fist at a cloud.
Shouting.
