Fire prevention warning in manual

The Safety section of your user guide should include more warnings on unattended use and the risk of fire caused by friction if the CNC misbehaves due to an equipment, material holddown, or toolpath issue. It can only take a few seconds to cause a fire if the collet or bit is spinning but not moving.

@Chucky_ott did you have first hand experience of this pandemonium you described? I had epic failures occur when I have left my CNC unattended on two occasions. Now, I get my coffee, go to the bathroom and get my noise canceling headphones and enjoy the carve. Lord knows there always is something else I can be doing in the shop.

No I haven’t. But there are a few posts and videos that describe it. In one case, the work piece was not properly fastened and became loose. The spindle kept on moving and I guess the spinning collet on the wood created enough friction to cause a fire. And all within a few minutes. I don’t know if closed-loop steppers would have shut down the machine if there was any resistance from a loose pieces of lumber.

Here are two, The second one is not a Sienci CNC. But the same still applies.

Thanks @Chucky_ott,

We do warn about operating the machine unattended in several areas, but I don’t think we mention the fire risk. I’ll chat with the team about adding a bit more to the safety section.

Take care,
