First little project - shapes puzzle

My first functional piece came of the Altmill.

A simple shapes puzzle board for some shapes we have lying around from another toy box. Nothing too fancy but great training ground.

I had to figure out how to get the exact clamp shape. I decided to just trace the outline by going around it on a piece of paper with a pen. And then asked Gemini to convert it in a crisp and clear line drawing for me.

Then used that in MillMage to trace it.

The other shapes I could just set up with MillMage’s standard shapes.

All cut with a 1/4 inch upcut endmill from Sienci’s simple starter set.

Went with the tape and glue method for the hold down. That worked great.

Turned out sharp, just a bit of chipout on one corner of the star.

The boy is happy with yet another piece to play with.

Any tips or suggestion on baby safe coloring welcome!

@CuttingTheCrapAlex Nice work. Numbers and the alphabet to follow?

A downcut bit would likely help with the tearout. One thing I do if possible is apply the finish (i.e. I use clear polyurethane but I probably would not here since babies can chew on it.) before milling. That definitely helps.

@CuttingTheCrapAlex Thanks for posting this. In terms of baby-safe finishes, look at real milk paint. I’ve done blocks for young children and the research that I did at the time showed that they could chew on it with no ill effects.

@gwilki Good call on the baby-safe finish. This is probably frequently overlooked. I edited my message accordingly.

Great tip! Thanks.

How was your experience using it? Seems like a nice product.

@CuttingTheCrapAlex I like it. I’ve used it on other projects, too. It’s a very old style finish. I buy the powder from Lee Valley, but I’m sure that it’s easily available.

Ooooh nice first. Jumping in are we?

Seems you are a youngster using all them scary new doomsday tools, but it did the job nicely without destroying the world.. (this time) I would’ve just traced the picture and use the node tidy function (or something) to tidy thing up.

On the baby color thing. One may want to wait with the tattoos untill they grow up a wee.

Nice job. Great way to use scrap. My wife and I were talking on the way home from visiting our kids about me making toys for our Great Grandson. Great idea. Thanks Pat
