I do a lot of 3D parts where I cut one side, flip the part, and cut the other. Cuts can go up to 2” (50mm) deep. The Altmill shoe goes up and down with the spindle so I don’t know it will work well for me. I’ve only used fixed height dust shoes on other machines.
Any advice? Can I attach a fixed height shoe to the Altmill?
I run a spindle mounted dust shoe on my Longmill Mk2 that has a 2” brush and do that kind of thing a lot. depending on your dust collection system it still works effectively to minimize the chips. I can always swap in longer brushes if necessary.
You might want to look into a constant height dust shoe that is attached to the gantry rather than the spindle. There have been several DIY designs shown off here on the forum (somehow, most CNC’ers also seem to have have 3D printers…), one of which is FrancisCreation’s AutoDustBoot.
