Iโm cutting parts using my Longmill MK2 CNC from 1-1/16 thick Jatoba hardwood. The 1/8 bits that came with the set-up are not long enough.I already broke two. I saw some bits on Amazon that are 1/8 diamiter and 1-1/2" long. Does anyone have any suggestions for decent bits I could use for this task?
I like jatoba, pretty wood. I have never found a 1/8 bit that I liked that was over one inch cutting depth. SpeTool makes both upcut and downcut 1/8 inch bit with a 1/4 inch shank that I use a lot. Never had a break. Not sure how to help with the 1-1/2 inch cut. When I have had deep 1/8 inch profile cuts, Iโve cut from each side to complete them.
Any longer 1/8 inch bits, I would worry a lot about breaking them.
I bought the 1-1/2 X 1/4 bit from SPE. I think asking the 1/8" to do what I wanted is pushing my luck so I bought the 1/4. I havenโt had the chance to get back to it. I was making handles for cutting boards and used my table saw and miter to cut and round over with palm router.
If I get orders for these in any quantity Iโll get back to it on the CNC.
I think? I might have couple suggestions if you can move up to 1/4" dia. Iโve tried several different up and down cut 2 flute 1/4" bits for a final cut out pass on all my projects. From 1 1/2" redwood to the dense Claro walnut (also up to 1 1/2").
My current go to is a SpeTool SP-1/4"-Dia1/4" W04004. I regularly go deeper/past the 1" flutes. I cut out a lot of hard walnut .13" depth at 40-60ipm.
For a 1 1/2" depth I use these. S1406 Solid Carbide Nano Coated Upcut Spiral Router Bit - 2 Flutes - 1/4 SD - 1/4 CD - 1-1/2 CL - 3 OL
I did go with the SPE 1-1/4 bit you mention. This confirms my selection. Thanks.
