LongMill 48x30 vs 30x30

Hi everyone,

First post here! I’m currently looking into getting a LongMill, but I’m torn between the 48x30 and the 30x30. Is the 48x30 any more rigid, or is it just a longer X-axis?

Also, is it possible to upgrade the LongMill with a spindle?

Thanks a lot!

Don’t know if it would be more rigid, but the extra width can be handy. Yes you can put a spindle on it. I have LongMill Mk1, with a 65mm water cooled spindle from PWN, and it works great.

Hey Pelibob,

Welcome to the playground.

It is “just” a longer X-axis. It even is an upgrade to make if you have a 30x30 and want a wider X.

I don’t think an 18inch extra length would compromise rigidity but if it would the 30 inch X-axis, as a beam is more ridgid. That said. The 48" kit comes with a T12 leadscrew to counter wobley whipping. I feel it makes it more rigid in that aspect for its a good stirdy lead screw with good stirdy Flange bearings and a big ass anti backslash nut.

So, if I look at it, I think the extra length on the x axis wont do much, but upgrading from a T8 to a T12 drive train does.

I’d say that’s more stirdy.

Here you can find the spindle upgrade kitt for the longmill.:

Hi Spamming_Eddie,

I didn’t know the leadscrew was different between the two models. Thanks for the info! :victory_hand:
