Major dust collection system upgrade

Old system,

One stage 220v 2hp King Canada dust collector with a 1-micron canaster that is 1200 CFM’s and a static pressure of 9.5, 4” PCV piping and fittings and plastic blast gates.

Updated system

Updated the one stage 220v 2hp King Canada dust collector into a two stage with a cyclone separator. Changed the blast gates to aluminum blast (no longer have bypass issues) and made two zones where I can shut off one side of the shop when not in use right at the cyclone separator, so I don’t loss any air flow to a side not in use.

Used an Anemometer to take reading at the inlet of each machine in feet/minute. The meter said that it was just Hi at the dust collector as the suction was so high. At the CNC machine with 5’ of 2-1/2” flexible hose was 3150. Removed the hose a took a reading at the reducer and it was 5600. Removed the reducer to get the full 4” opening and it was 6300. Then took a reading at the clean out just before the 4” piping for the CNC machine and it was 8200. I don’t think getting the 4” piping closer to the CNC (reduce the 5’ section of 2-1/2 flexible pipe) inlet will make much of a change as the LongMill MK2 Magnetic Dust Shoe has small inlets.

I don’t know how much of an improvement in air movement there was from the old system to the updated system as I didn’t have the meter until I updated the system. But I can tell you that I can feel a vast improvement. After installing my new Auto Spin T1 router I trammed it and then resurfaced my spoilboard. I can tell you I had no dust in the dust shoe or around the spoilboard.

I think a more important thing to be concerned with is sanding dust. When sanding we are so close to the wood that sanding dust must go by our mouth and nose before it can get to our air cleaner. I am now going to get a dust extractor and hook it up to my orbital sander.

I know we all use black walnut in our projects but did you didn’t know, Black Walnut Wood is toxic to humans due to the presence of juglone and wood dust. Black Walnut Wood contains juglone and inhaling wood dust can cause respiratory issues.

Great Job Pat! Any pictures? They speak a thousand words…

Karver, do you know how i can attach pictures? Thanks

Sure, but I am not sure of your permissions. @Gwiki can help with explaining that. But when you start a reply there is a little icon with an arrow pointing up that says upload in the message menu bar. You can attach a . jpg file under 10mb. Hope this helps.
