Longmill MK2/MK2.5 Automatic dust shoe Project.
Project difficulty: Hard
This will utilize the A-axis and requires the following:
2x MGN12H linear guide rails @ 200mm
1x 200mm T8 Leadscrew with flange nut
1x nema17 Stepper motor
1x leadscrew coupler (5mm to 8mm)
M3 x 10mm screws and M3 nylock nuts
Any 3d printer that has at least 220mm x220mm x 250mm print area
The Super Long board
Various length m5 countersunk screws
M5 nylock nuts
flexible Dust brush (5mm width)

Hey Erik,
Welcome to the dungeon. Talking about diving in head first. It seems like an interesting project, even though I cannot implement it (No SLB, no 3D-printer). Having the 4th axis output of the SLB is a great extra to have and to use for other than a rotating axis.
I wonder, do you have a prototype working. And if so, can you post pictures/movie?

Thank you for your interest! I’m currently working on a prototype and once the design is finalized I will likely be selling a some of the 3d printed parts but just need to iron out some kinks and Check for collisions. I will keep this thread updated along the adventure and Plan to continue updating the source files for makers. Keep an eye out if you’re interested as I will be posting pictures here soon.

Thank you for the interest! I’m debating on the type of limit switch to use and will likely go with a typical micro switch with a roller as it’ll be easy to work with. Thank you for the wishes, my friend!
Here’s a curious thought. What if the magnetic dust shoe was attached to the Z-Axis carriage instead of the X-Axis? That way when you are using a surfacing bit, a larger bowl bit, or even a very shallow bowl concave bit, it will not hit the dust shoe when the router retracts.
Hi, friend! The problem with the longmill’s stock magnetic dust shoe that I ran into was the clear acrylic plate that acted as a airflow seal. It restricted large surfacing bits from fitting without a collision with that acrylic piece. For this dust shoe I will likely be adding a Nylon bristle brush airflow seal so there are no collisions with hard plastic.
I agree. The overall design is good but once you set the dust shoe at the correct height the spindle or router retracts on the Z-Axis and the dust shoe stays stagnant on the X-Axis carriage. If you are utilizing a larger diameter bit than the hole in the clear plastic window of the dust shoe you will destroy the dust shoe, the window, or the router bit or perhaps all three. That is why I was suggesting that the dust shoe move up and down with the Z-Axis carriage instead of staying stationary on the X-Axis carriage.
Oh I’m sorry are you talking about the Clear plastic insert on my model or the original longmill dust shoe? That clear plastic window on my design is replaced with a chanel for a nylon bristle brush and only the bristles collide with the spindle 80mm or 65mm Clamping bracket.
I have one working for 1F. Already have some revision coming for tool less removal and airflow improvement.
Mine doesn’t require any axis control, just simple input signal to retract/expand the dust shoe. I’m using close loop stepper directly attach to motor with seediuno xiao for micro-controller and some encoder.
