I have made some of these too. I usually cut it out to the shape of the book, not rectangular, yours looks great!

This is my 3rd one.It is the first one I did not cut out. Customer provided the 13X17 inch block of 2in thick cherry. I did not want to loose all that live edge on this one.
I can understand why your router bit broke, given the depth it’d been cutting in the odd places. Perhaps you’d want to slow down the feedrate when doing those areas.
