I’ve come to realize I’ve only posted here when I was having issues, venting or researching. I haven’t has as much time as I would have liked to get into this hobby, especially considering I will have had the machine a year in June. But I have completed a few things I think are maybe worth sharing (I’ll let you all be the judge of that lol). I will note that most of (okay… All of them) these projects observe the 6ft rule, they look great at 6ft away lol.
First is a sign I made for my mom, she bought which can only be described in very generous terms as a fixer upper and has dubbed her house as ‘The Projects’. Now the neighbours will have no absolute confidence in that fact lol.
Second up is Christmas ornaments. What started out as a small batch of turned into 36 resin poured ornaments and a full time job just before Christmas. I love the idea of these, and while I got the time down significantly with some changes, the fact they were designed for a laser and not an end mill, and the logistics and work involved with the resin has me second guessing whether I’ll ever return to them.
This third one was on a whim, it turned out mostly okayish. I do need to spend some more time with the 2.5d carving and figuring out how to minimize the tool paths a bit more I think. But good enough to hang up for now!
And last up is the one I just made (on another whim) that I needed some help with as the vector file was a mess and I toolpathed my way into a dividing by 0 situation figuratively speaking. I’d like to particularly thank @gwilki and @Chucky_ott for their time and help with trying to figure out what was happening with this. But I think the result turned out great, and may now be considering doing a full 8’ plywood sheet with tiling .
@Greener Thanks much for posting these. I hope that others will follow your lead. FWIW, my completely biased favourites are the compass rose and the forest scene. Not to take away from the others, though. Well done.
By Word, those are nice looking projects you managed to use your fancy hammer on.
The ornamanet thing exploding I relate to, I had that happening myself , buit was not man enough to see it trough, like you did.
The rose is level up, init? By Jove what a beauty.
But the one I like the most, by far Is that relaitive simple but fantastic silhouette. -The Altmill killerrrrrr- Oh how I enjoyed following the topics around it! I liked this project even before I saw your piuctures of it.
It’s even better with lights off. Goooorgeous! It’s does feel like there is a tiny bit missing though…
@Greener Nice work. They all look like nice projects. Epoxy is fun to work with. You can get beautiful results. But you need to be mindful of bleeding and cure time.
My favourites are the compass rose and the silhouette as well. They just hit right I feel, though there may be some recency bias there lol. There was lots of lessons learned with the ornaments, some I had to learn again soon after (that bleeding is a nightmare!). I like the idea of the ornaments but feel maybe change up the wood choice a bit, and the hours spent pouring all the colours of resin, and topping them off, and poking/heating and still getting air bubbles was frustrating. Nevermind the days of curing and having my kitchen table as a semi permanent craft station for the month of December lol. With the something missing on the silhouette piece, I do feel it’s a bit small on its own for the wall, need some supplementary pieces, or as I mentioned I might just make one that’s double that size! Also want to experiment with the backlighting a bit, the lights I attached to that were cheap dollar store fairy lights with no effective way to diffuse them and ran short on length. I’m happy with the proof of concept though!
