Vortex mounting height on Longmill with ER20 Spindle

I just assembled my new Vortex for my Longmill MK 2.5 with SLB. I’m using the 1.5 Kw ER20 spindle.

As I place the Vortex on the spoil board, it looks like the ER20 will have very limited travel. I’ve seen a few posts about raising the Longmill up. How much is a good distance? Also, I have two layers of spoil board, could I just cut out a spot for the Vortex and just lower it?

I have the feet supporting the Y rails at the same height as my spoilboard. The Vortex is screwed onto the table, so, lower than the spoilboard. On top of that, I have second router mount and, using a bracket that I made, I can raise the router another 1.5" or so. I only need to use it when I am maxing out the size of the material that the Vortex can handle.
The setup works well, but when using 1/8" mills, I need to mount the material on a second spoilboard. Otherwise the mill can’t cut through the material.
