1.5 or 2.2 spindle which do you recommend

I am about to pull the trigger on the purchase so feedback would be appreciated

Next to having the correct outlet installed

Which one do you recommend? Is it worth it to go for the 2.2 ?

I will be dabbling in aluminum too

If it were me, Iโ€™d go for the 2.2 for more power, and you can use larger collets. But you will need a 220v circut.

Larger collets? I thought the current crop of 1.5kw spindles already have a larger collet (larger than the original version)
Having said that, for the small difference in price, if I had 220V available it would be a np-brainer.

Yeah, they both come with ER20 now. The 1.5kW used to be ER16 but believe that was changed last year.

The bigger issue if you are ordering now is the 2.2kW only has about a 2 week lead time but the 1.5kW has a 2 month lead time.

i too have a 2.2kw spindle and recommend it, but, please donโ€™t buy the rounded one, go square :folded_hands:

Why square and not rounded?

In the past I had a 1.5k spindle for years. Switching to 2.2k was worth it for me. The 1.5k would bog down using larger bits causing burning issues.

@022580 Iโ€™m not using my Altmill in a production environment so my 1.5kW unit with ER20 collet has been adequate. But given the $175 CAD price difference between the 1.5 and 2.2, Iโ€™d have gone with the 2.2 if it had been available at the time. I purchased a 220V dust extractor so I needed new outlets regardless.

The question you should be asking yourself is ATC or non-ATC. Thatโ€™s where the big price difference comes in

has more bolts to tighten on the z axis, different load spreading
