A common failure point with relief carving isn’t the CNC — it’s the source image. Whether the concept art comes from a stock photo, a hand-drawn sketch, or an AI generator, the same checkpoints apply before it becomes a toolpath.
Grayscale height logic. Relief software reads brightness as elevation. Flatten the image mentally: does white actually mean “highest point” in your intended carve, or did the artwork use light for a shadow effect instead? Mixed lighting cues are the number one reason a model comes out with almost no depth compared to the picture.
Edge cleanup. Soft gradients and anti-aliased edges from digital art can turn into mushy, undefined borders once converted. A quick posterize or threshold pass in an image editor before import usually preserves crisper transitions.
Aspect ratio and physical dimensions. Decide the finished size in real units first, then crop or pad the image to match — stretching afterward distorts detail ratio and can make fine features disappear at your bit diameter.
Depth limits. Set a realistic max Z depth for your material and bit reach before generating the toolpath, not after. Vectric vCarve and Fusion 360 both let you rescale height independently of the image, but only within reason — extreme grayscale ranges won’t map cleanly onto shallow stock.

Keep concepts separate from validated files. Store the original artwork, the cleaned grayscale, and the proven G-code as distinct versions so a bad edit doesn’t overwrite a working file.
