Altmill DIY Dust Shoe Questions?

I am sourcing a 220v spindle so I need to print a dust shoe. I found the stl files here https://resources.sienci.com/view/am-open-source/
The file has the stl and notes for printing, but no info on where to source the brush material or the clear plastic for the window. I am curious what sources others have used to complete the project?
I did search here for the info and came up with nothing.

I got the answer from the facebook group. McMastercar is the place for brush stock and someone already modified the stl body file for no windows. I think that will solve the problems!

Amazon has brush stock as well and is probably a fraction of McMasterCarr

According to the facebook group, the amazon stuff is low quality compared to McMaster-Carr. I will probably start off with the better stuff to see what all the fuss is about. I need a few items from them anyway.

I wouldn’t be surprised that the Amazon stuff is low quality. It is cheap crap from China. McMaster Carr doesn’t sell cheap crap.
Having said that, I am using the cheap stuff and it does the job.
If you are getting stuff from McMaster Carr anyway then it makes sense to buy the brush stuff from them as well. For me, the shipping would end up costing as much as the brushes.

I emailed sienci asking for more info a few months back but no response. I’d far prefer to have windows.

I did find a lot of complaints about the windows and more than one preferred to delete them. There is a lot of info on the facebook forum about the windows and a few files.

I cleaned up the spindle body to fill in the windows a little better. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7008466

Are folks getting the bristles from McMaster Carr? They have lots of options. I’m not sure which would fit the groove best.

The facebook group has a few files with better “read me” details.

“The Bristle strip I purchased was from McMaster-Carr - ITEM# 7900T1
(Easy-Cut Strip Brush 7/32” Wide x 3/16" High Backing, 1" Overall Height, 3ft. Length)

The 2 M4x16 Hex Socket Head Cap Bolts Screws were purchases on amazon as well."

I ordered that brush and it should be here in a few days. I will see if it fits.

FYI, if you buy any parts from Scienci Labs, you can ask them to sent you replacement brushes. They will include them in your order - they did not charge me for them. PWN CNC has the brushes as well.

I am not a fan of the dust show shipped with the spindle. I printed an independant Z-Axis model that has the hose connection out the back. Much more practical.

You can buy the stl library from PWN CNC for less that $20.

So far this doesnt fit what I printed. I may have to modify the stl for clearance. Not sure what changed. Not a big deal, it is very nice material.

@gmckeown I don’t see the stl files on their site. Dense, I guess. Can you please point me? Tks

About half way down the page under “80mm Dust Shoe”

@DonF Tks, Don. I was referring to the stl files that @gmckeown was talking about, for sale by PWN CNC.

Search the PWN site for the word “Maker.” A few pop up.

@DonF Thanks much, Don.

The above link contains all the files for making your own parts. I ordered the heat inserts and metric screws on Amazon. If you don’t want to use Metric, 10-32,8-32,6-32 & 4-40 screws can be used. I found that many parts can be assembled without heat inserts. I just ran a tap into the PETG.

There is no way the McMaster 7/32 strip brush will fit the original stl. The 1/8 that McMaster offers would be too sloppy. A cross section of the original design shows the problem, It really is smaller than 7/32. So I made a new cut and sweep to match the width of the 7/32 brush. I am pleased with the McMaster brush. It is very high quality, I was pulling on the bristles with pliers trying to force it in the original part and it was undamaged. I doubt amazon stuff would hold up to that abuse.
