AltMill Thread Milling with Aluminum

Hello All!

I have been considering purchasing an AltMill MK2 once it becomes available, but can’t find anything on people’s success with thread milling on aluminum. I would things its capable, but can’t find anything explicitly talked about.

Can you thread mill on the AltMill?

Thank you!

You can thread mill on lesser machines. I don’t have an AltMill, but I’d say with confidence that you can thread mill.
What CAM software are you using?

Wha is so special about tread milling that especialy difficult? I looked at a few tubes on the subject and I feel it’s more about the right endmill, toolpaths and knowhow than having a special machine.

Assuming you have the special endmills and the knowhow, it all comes down to being able to create the toolpaths. Vectric V11 (all versions) has this covered, as seen in this vectric tutorial on the matter:

There is a great vid on the altmill creating a guitar out off aluminum that should take away any doubts on the capability of the alt to accuratly cut aluminum, if that is what you are doubting. It may or may not contain treading holes, but I am sure that when a machine can cut the hole that needs to be treaded, it can tread it without a sweat too.

Check it out.

Its not so much that i am doubting it can–its just every video i have seen with the AltMill, even from Sienci, where threads are involved, i see them manually threading them.

It just got me wondering.

Better to ask the question now than to buy it and be frustrated later.

I use Fusion360 by the way.

Thanks for the replies.
