Bits keep loosening in router

This has happened to me several times now especially with longer bits. The bit somehow gets loose in the router collet and will either break or cut very deep into the project and ruin it. I clean out the collet with each bit change and I tighten the collet nut pretty tight. Any suggestions?

@timjet Does this happen with all bits? What router are you using? Does it use true ER collets, or is it the sleeve type used in trim routers like the Makita?
Collets are consumables. They don’t last forever.

I’ve had this happen with long bit’s. What I think was happening was I was putting the bit too far into the collet. The collet pulls the bit in as you tighten the nut and if the bit hit’s the motor shaft it won’t get a good queeze.

I’m using the Makita router than came with my Longmill. I use .25” end mill bit probably 75% of the time and I think it happens with those bits most often. I’m not sure what a true ER collet is, are you suggesting that would solve this issue?

I’ve had it happen with normal size bits too. I never insert the bit all the way, always leave some room at the top of the bit.

This is an ER collet.

You can see from the design of the cuts that is gets a more uniform squeeze. I have the Makita so I don’t have ER collets either. I think the angle of the taper is different and the groove at the end attaches the collet to the nut. My little 3018 I learned on used ER collets with a little 300W spindle. It’s the only thing I miss with the LongMill.

@timjet You cannot replace the sleeve/bushing type collet with an ER collet. I asked only to get more information. I don’t know how long you have been using this collet, but I would suggest that you try a replacement. These things do wear and should be resplaced from time to time. There is no magic number of hours, unfortunately.
How are you tightening? Do not use the red button on the router, Use two wrenches.

Thanks Michael, it doesn’t look like they make an ER collet for our Makita.

I do use 2 wrenches. The same collet for 2 yrs, a new one is on order. Thanks.

@timjet Please report back after you’ve taken the new collet for a test drive.

I should have asked. Is this the 1/4" or the 1/8" collet?

Will do, 1/4” collet.

I have the AutoSpin T1 from Sienci. It uses ER11 collets. It is quieter than the Makita, appears to be stronger, and it gets the speed and on/off from the Super Long Board. I am loving it.

Does it work with the regular long board?

It appears it does. I would double check with Sienci.

@timjet According to this, yes

If my Makita dies I’ll be getting one! I have a LongMill Mk1 and a spindle isn’t recommended so the AutoSpin would be the next best thing.

Sienci makes cool stuff!
