Calibrate results are way off

I haven’t installed the latest version yet. That said, i wanted to calibrate my genmitsu 6050 and the measurements that were returned was 50% off. I moved the x direction 6" and it thought I moved 3". I set the units to inches but the calibration defaults to mm. Probably the problem. How do i fix this or has this been fixed in the latest version?

I don’t know the answer to your question but I’ll provide the formula to calibrate an axis in case this problem is holding you up and you don’t know the formula. gSender shows the formula but I’d rather post something you don’t need than leave you hanging.

Divide the distance asked to move by the distance measured and then multiply the result by the current steps per mm to get the new value.

I found that formula and will probably use it to manually set the steps. I don’t understand how gSenders built in calculator is so far off. Im missing something im sure.

@Rkhutch if your units were in inches but calibration was in mm then I’d assume you’re using version 1.5.0? I’m pretty confident we fixed this in 1.5.1, so if you update then then issue should go away

Thanks. I’ve determined my cnc is accurate as it came to me but ill test the calibration tool anyway. My reason for checking is because i made some parts in Fusion 360 that didn’t fit together. I have a feeling it was something over looked there.

Were your parts close to fitting? Did you allow for some sort of fit tolerance?

I always have to use some kind of tolerance to make parts fit together. I believe there are a couple of reasons for this.

One would be machine flex. You cut a 1" hole but it’s a little tight because of the cutting forces and the opposite happens with the plug.

Another, more insidious, reason is that your bit’s often aren’t exactly the size advertised. As was pointed out to me here a 1/4" end mill with a 1/4" shaft won’t be quite 1/4" at the flutes because they had to be cut and sharpened. But regardless of size everything has some margin to be in ‘spec’ and that could work for or against you.

Depending on the material and whether I’m 3D printing or milling this tolerance varies but I usually find that 0.1-0.2mm or ~0.004-0.008" is a good place to start. That would be the gap I start with so the difference in radius, not diameter if it was a circle.
