Dewalt DW611 on the Altmill?

Hi. New here. I am considering the Altmill 4x4x. Does anyone run the Dewalt DW611 on their Altmill? What spindle holder do you use? Thanks

As far as I can see, the dewald 611 has a 69mm body. Not the standard 80mm the altmill is equiped with.

There are some peeps (a d topics) about equiping the altmill with a router, but those where mostly as secundairy or for bridging the time someone was without an actual spindle. These peeps made their own, either 3d printed or fillers or custom adjusting a holder, either sienci or 3th party.

I bet Chuck will come in shortly to offer assinstance, So I can say nothing else than, take it away Chuck!

@GPeak Have you checked the Onshape drawings to see if they have an adapter for it? If you load up the Altmill drawings, you’ll find the adapters somewhere along the bottom. If they don’t have one, maybe some of the others will work. The adapter you’ll need will depend on the diameter of the router and if the gear runs the length of the shaft. But yes it’s been done. I used two different methods for two different routers (Makita clone and Ridgid)

What is the ā€œOnshape drawingā€? I just ordered the Altmill 4x4. The lead time is 2 weeks on the machine. Problem is, lead time one the spindle is 2 months. So I have to figure something out in the meantime. I have the Dewalt DW 611 and Bosch 1617. Ugghh!

@GPeak Check the link I provided. Sienci is all open source and they provide their 3D drawings. They have models of some router adapters which you can print on a 3D printer. I’d find those for you but I’m not at my computer.

I just checked the Altmill and Longmill drawings and I can’t find the adapters. I know they used to be there but maybe they were removed or I simply can’t find them.

I reached out to Sienci about using the Autospin T1 with the altmill, they said it is possible but you need to order the longmill 65mm mount and lower the speeds of the machine in the software. Since the DW611 is not 65mm I do not think it would be possible without a custom mount.

There are a few 69mm to 80mm printed sleeves on Etsy. It would not be difficult to print one if you have, or have access to, a 3D printer.

I’m currently using a 3D printed adapter for a Makita I designed and printed while I wait for the ATC. It works well. I imagine the same thing with a different diameter would work just as well.

I ran a Makita RT0701C for several years, burning up two from stalls, then went to a Spindle and found it was so much better, quieter, more powerful, controllable with gCode, and with the VFD, would never stall and burn.

I am going to get the 1.5kw spindle. The lead time on the Altmill is 2 weeks. The lead time on the spindle is 2 months. So, I needed something to fill the gap.

I have been using the 1.5kw spindle for 18 months with absolutely no problems, even with a 3/8ā€ bit. The gSender software controls turning it on and off as well as the speed. Excellent tool with plenty of power.

I’ve been a user of the DeWalt DW611 for about 4 years on a MK 2.5 (built to that level). You use a 71mm Bracket with two rings of Painter’s tape. Because of the carved spiral rings, it does not sit level and takes a lot to tram it. I consider it a bit under powered for an altmill.

I would use not less than a Auto-Spin T-1 Router which fits well in a 65mm bracket. No lack for power at all. Most people though when getting an altmill usually go with a spindle because of what the altmill is designed for.
