Drag Chain Overload

I haven’t received my AltMill yet, but I’m trying to plan ahead as much as possible during the wait. I will be using a 3hp 220V water-cooled spindle. I will also be using an OPT 45W laser with air assist. And for what it’s worth, I also plan on running the LED strips that the SLB-EXT supports. So, in the drag chain I’ll have:

Spindle drive cable
coolant in tube
coolant out tube
laser control cable
laser air assist tube
LED control cable
X Motor cable
Z Motor cable

Will all this fit in the standard drag chains!? Do they make bigger ones?

Not quite as much as you plan but I have the below in mine with room to spare.

Spindle drive cable
laser control cable
laser air assist tube
X Motor cable
Z Motor cable
Shielded USB Cable for camera

You might try something like these…

These are for water and air lines outside the drag chain

Ah. That’s very cool. I have a 3D printer, are the files for this available for download? I’m curious, why 2 air lines? Looks to be on a OneFinity, do you know if the fit is the same for the Sienci drag chains?

Supply and return on the water, obviously… I think the 2 air lines are on for the tool changer and maybe one to blow dust off the cut. Honestly, I was sending the pictures as an idea and/or inspiration. I don’t remember if I saw these on Etsy or Printables. (I kept the pictures to use as examples for the time in the future when I needed something like this.) They look like they would be easy enough to model if you had your drag chain to get some measurements from.

You can just make out some lettering on those parts. And a quick search brings up these: Onefinity CNC – Ryan Murphy Designs LLC

I upgraded to the 18x50 drag chain size as I have the standard wires with limit sensors plus 2 electrical (1 for the probe conductor, 1 for LED ring light) as well as the control/water lines for the PWNCNC spindle. I bought two pieces and they fit the 30x48 size with a little left over. There is some wiggle room so not a disaster if you have to pull an additional wire/tube in at a later date.

Those 3D printed ones are nice!

One issue to bear in mind is a problem that some users have had with signals from their spindle power affecting the other functions (x, y, z). I was having the Z-axis going squirely from time to time and a friend who’s an electrical genius recommended that I move the spindle cable to the far side of the drag chain, so that it was away from the other cables.
So far this has worked perfectly for me.
If you’re planning to load up the drag chain, then just be aware of this potential issue.

BTW, I really liked the water coolant line arrangement that Rob came up with. Cool… literally!

I know this is 3 months later, but are you running this on an Altmill and can you provide a link for the cable chains if you are running on Altmill. Im having the same issue with space. I am confused about the numbers you were using you said you upgraded to an 18x50 drag chain size. the you mention something about a 30x48 size as well. By my measurements height width a 30 x 50 would be able fit nicely ontop of the y rail. is this the size you used?
