gControl for idiots

So apparently I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer so please forgive this stupid question … this is my first touch screen and I have never used Win11 before. I have the gControl computer up and running and want to connect to a network drive. I go to the file browser > network … Up comes the entry field. I tap on the entry field but I do not get an on-screen keyboard … what do I need to do to enter data into the entry field (no, connect keyboard is not an acceptable answer)

I have not used Windows 11 but in Windows 10 there was a ‘Tablet Mode’. When in tablet mode the on screen keyboard should pop up when you need it. I think you could get to it from the settings button on the bottom right but I know Windows 11 is a bit different but it should be in settings somewhere.

Maybe check this out. It helps if you know what to search for!

I can bring up an on-screen keyboard through system settings but the keyboard covers up 2/3 rd of the screen including the input field.
I would assume that the computer is already set up for tablet mode. In other cases, when there is an input field, if I touch the field Win throws up the on-screen keyboard like it should but not in the file explorer window :frowning:

Unfortunately that’s all I got. I had a laptop with a removable keyboard awhile back but I didn’t use it as a tablet that often. I’m not sure how to adjust the size of the keyboard if it’s possible.

I would make sure you don’t have any screen scaling on and are using the maximum resolution. If your desktop is set to 150% or something you could be losing space.

EDIT: In that article it said that in tablet mode the start menu would take up the whole screen so that might be an indicator of if it’s already on.

It takes a bit of getting used to but a single press of something should be like left-clicking your mouse. If you press and hold and then release after the the circle appears around where you pressed, that is like a right-click of your mouse.

If the on-screen keyboard is in your way you can press and drag it’s title bar at its top to move it to other areas of the screen.

Hey @Jens,

Chatting with the team, all gControl panels have the option “show touch keyboard” on by default, so if you click on any text field the touchscreen keyboard will automatically pop up

If it isn’t happing, you can check the settings.

Get to know the touch keyboard - Microsoft Support

Set when the keyboard opens
If you’re on a device with a touchscreen, you can choose whether or not the touch keyboard automatically comes up when you touch a text box. Here’s how:

  • Select Start > Settings > Time & language > Typing.
  • Select Touch keyboard to expand that section.
  • Next to Show the touch keyboard, select when you want the touch keyboard to show (Always, Never, or When no keyboard attached)

You can also resize the windows, by dragging the corners/sides to the size you want. This behavior should not be different in the file Explorer Windows.

Cheers,
Stephen

That is exactly what happens with all other entry fields that I had occasion to use. Unfortunately this feature did not work for some reason for the file browser window.
I did eventually force the keyboard to appear to allow data input. I realize that it makes no sense that every entry field in every other window will pop up the virtual keyboard yet it does not work with the file browser.
I eventually decided that a keyboard will be a requirement for data entry while the touchscreen is useful for day-to-day mill operation.
