H100 & RS485: the subject we all love?

I know I’ve been rapid firing posts trying to figure out this new you but I’m hoping this is the last one for a while - the subject everyone seems to love, the H100 vfd and the ol RA485!

Has anyone gotten it to work? And what was the trick?

I’ve spent the last…6 hours?..trying to get the vfd and controller to talk via the rs connection and I’m having no luck. I’m on my 5th or 6th vfd default reset and inputting the info from the sienci guide online, I’m on my 3rd install of gsender and have had 7 pages open on my phone trying to research how this thing works with different subtleties to no avail.

I’ve searched this forum, the unofficial guide, technical manuals and I’m just about at my wits end. I had my previous machine running through a 0-10v pwm on this same vfd forever, so it blows my mind how I can’t get these things to talk. I’ve gone from one blinking communication light and no second light to no blinking lights at all, flipped the + & - wires on the vfd hookup, made sure the vfd is on before the controller and…

Well.. What’s the alternative? Pwm? Can anyone link the up voltage converter thing I need to convert 5v to 10 for the pwm?

Can I also humbly suggest that the next iteration of the slb ext have a pwm upgrade from 5 to 10 volts to help eliminate this issue?

The main reason I want the rs connection to work is I have a 6 pod rapidchange atc magazine waiting to get installed and if I can’t control the spindle from the controller that’s a $650 dollar paperweight.

Any help appreciated

i have h100 1.5 ER-16 spindle and altmill mk2 4x4. followed the assembly guide and have no issues with spindle. I updated my firmware to GRBLHAL new version and latest gsender and after few issues during firmware upgrade, spindle is up and running. Did this ever work for you? or is this brand new setup? there were some people having issues with slb-ext boards that sienci labs had to replace

@Crazy8sCommando It’s not clear if you have the Sienci VFD and spindle. Can you confirm?

I’m guessing you went through the troubleshooting guides?

Trying manual mode might be a good way to remove the SLB from the equation and determine if the VFD and spindle are working correclty.

As @Altmillal1114 said, there have been reported issues with some SLBs. Same for the cables.

I don’t have their spindle kit but the set I already have is reflective of their H100vfd kit (1.5kw air cooled 80mm spindle, 1.5kw 12.5a vfd) and worked well for the openbuilds machine I replaced.

Yes, I’ve gone through the guides posted along with one noted as the ‘unofficial h100 setup’ for pairing the vfd kit to the slb ext. I have been experiencing the alarm 14 constantly as I have been following the various guides I’ve found. That’s where the 7 open pages have come into play lol, too many different ways to do the same thing.

I have already gone through running it manually and it works fine, the only issue I’m having is connecting signal from controller to vfd

This is a brand new setup as far as the machine and pairing the vfd/spindle kit. The vfd & spindle were on my previous machine and worked fine. The openbuilds controller I have uses 0-10v pwm for speed control which worked great but this new rs thing has me at a loss.

I haven’t tried updating firmware because most of what I’ve known of firmware is one hiccup creates a brick so I never try playing with that side of things. Is it a one click solution to update it? I’m more end user compared to electrical engineer so that and GitHub stuff could be above my neuron count capabilities

Looked up how to flash the firmware, went off mostly without a hitch - the config panel is a little different now and I’m getting the alarm 19 I’ve read about instead of 14, so something definitely updated

Time to see if I complain at it like I did last night lol

SSSSUUUCCCCCEEESSSSS!!

I omitted the wire from sienci labs ($26 shipped…sadface and used some shielded 2 core wire I had in the shop, hooked it up to the controller and VFD - bam. Done.

It runs, I’m happy, and now I’m hopefully gonna shut up for a while lol

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated!!

…now, on to that rapidchange..
