I have a RPi-5/8GB with Bookworm on it and I’ve tried a bunch of UGS Installations from different sites with no luck whatsoever and so I have some questions about this.
1 - Should I use another OS like Ubuntu or Fedora instead of Bookworm?
2 - Is there a tutorial somewhere that will get the current stable version of UGS up and running on a Pi-5 or should I stay away from the Pi all together?
3 - What’s the current version that I should use. I’ve been trying to install 2.1.15 but this site has a posting about 1.5.1. I’m confused at this point.
I don’t have any advice on UGS but I can clear up the version discrepancy for you.
Version 1.5.1 is for gSender which is Sienci’s G-code sender. gSender’s documentation can be found here if your interested in trying it. You can get different builds of gSender, including a couple for the Raspberry Pi on GitHub.

Thanks for your reply. I see now how I was confused. Universal G Code Sender and gSender are two completely different pieces of software from different developers. I did get UGS to work but now I’m exploring gSender as well which looks like a really awesome piece of software.
I have one question about gSender.
Can I draw patterns directly inside of it or is that what I would use CAMLab for?
Thanks again.

You’d need CAM software like CAMlab or any other to create your tool paths. The only thing gSender can do without CAM software is surfacing your spoilboard.

Thanks for the replies. I’m really newbie to all of this and I’ve got a lot to learn.
I think that CAMlab can only import 3D STL files. You can’t create a toolpath simply from vectors.
Essentially, you need three components to complete a CNC job: CAD design software to create your design, CAM software to create your toolpath, g-code sender to send the toolpath to the CNC.
Vectric vCarve, Vectric Aspire, Carbide Create, Carveco Maker, Fusion, Plasticity, all combine both CAD and CAM software. These will allow you to create toolpaths from vectors or 3D files that you create or buy. There are many others. Some free, some with a free trial, some easy, some complex.
Best thing to do is to find a few that have a free trial version a give it a go.
