Labels on sienci bits

Hi Everyone,

I’ve just received a sign makers bit set. I’m attempting to populate the tool list in EstlCAM. I think I’m doing it right. But I’m curious: what does the information on the label on the bit containers mean.

90° V-bit - this is self explanatory, but does a CNC machine know that it’s 90 as opposed to 60 or 30? Or is just based on our choice of tool path that we choose in the CAM software?

2T - I am assuming this refers to two cutting edges.

d 1512.7D1/4*44L

d 15 - diameter of the cutting part of the tool?

*12.7 - height of the cutting part the tool?

*D1/4 - imperial diameter of the shaft?

*44L - over all length of tool from end of shaft to tip?

Please let me know if I have assumed correctly or there are other meanings?

Thanks,

Nat

@hSolo Take a look here to see all the dimensions is a chart for that bit

I don’t know about EstlCAM, but in the Vectric tool database, I need to enter that included angle - in this case 90°. I can’t see how you could get proper toolpaths without that information.

I think @gwilki has you covered but I wanted to add one thing.

I’m not sure how EstleCAM sets up bits but in Vectric there are V bits and engraving bits and they both are V shaped. The thing is V bits use the included angle and the engraving bits use half of that. Obviously a programmer could use either as computers are pretty good at multiplication and division by two. Hopefully EstleCAM makes it clear which one you need.

Also you may not need all of the information provided for the bit but you’ll definitely need some of it.

@_Michael Good catch, Michael.
