Lost COM6 connectivity 45 minutes into a 1:45 carving

Hi there,
everything was going well into my first SLB carving - 45 minutes into a 1:45 carving COM6 went off line. I did not turn any other equipment on or off. ---- my CNC has been running with a Long Board for about a year and never lost connection. Checked COM6 and PC said all was good, but I could not reconnect the SLB with the PC.
After I power cycled the SLB & PC - made COM6 connection between SLB & PC right away.

Any guesses?
Thanks,

do some testing ---- If I remove the com cable from the SLB - connection drops - But will reconnect right away using gsender (when the connection dropped during the carve, I could not get to com6 in gsender). And no message ----- when the connection dropped during my carve, I got a message.

Hello Bob,

Welcome to the club. Disconnections are frustrating and can become a large issue. There are a meriad of solutions.

Most common are power savings settings, bad connecting usb, bad shielded usb, shop vacs that cause static and even steppers that can be an issue.

I have to go now and leave you with a page to look into the many solutions proposed in the many topics in the forum. Hope you find your solution.

Hi Bob, as this is a bit more of a complex issue, it might be best to send us in a ticket on our contact form for this so we can help you better. As @Spamming_Eddie said, there are many reasons why the signal could’ve cut out during a job - but for the new SLB which is more resiliant towards those common issues it might be a case of knocking into the cable while running or something else small like that. If I were you I would take out your bit and remove the material from your CNC and just run the job without any of those things there to see how it goes and rebuild your confidence in finding the source of the problem as you add things back into the equation

Thanks for the response — I tried a dry run (router off) of the code ---- the CNC and computer disconnected at about the same place. I walked away from the computer & Longmill during the carve – did not move or touch any cables.

I will try with a different carve file. Any other suggestions

If I had a slb, I would connect it via eth, directly onto my gsender pc to see if that would give a mkre stable result.

@BMcNanley Have you confirmed that none of Windows power settings are throttling the power to your USB ports? By default, Windows does this so we need to find all of them and turn off the settings. You need to do this in Power Settings and in Device Manager.

Thanks gwiki ---- I have checked both Device Manager & Power Settings in Windows 11 home — I didn’t see any power settings for USB ports.

Take Care, Bob

@BMcNanley

1.In windows 11, open control panel
2. open power settings
3. if you have not changed the default, it will have selected “balanced”
4. click on “change plan settings”
5. set “turn off display” and “put computer to sleep” to “never”
6. click on “change advanced power settings”
7. open the “usb settings” item
8 open “usb selective suspend settings”
9 select “disabled”

thanks gwiki ---- checking them all now.

Thanks gwiki for the power directions ----- changed very thing to “never” and testing ----- fingers crossed.
All in All, a great learning experience -----
Thanks again & Take Care,
Bob

@BMcNanley Pls report back, Bob, when you’ve taken things out for several test drives.

9/7/2024 — Made power changes to PC the CNC & PC still disconnected at about 1 hr. unable to select COM6 in gsender . This time I just power cycled the SLB & com6 came right up.

9/7/2024 Step 2 - run a different gcode (40 minutes) run to successful completion.

9/7/2024 Step 3 - run an other gcode (1hr 35min) run to successful completion.

9/8/2024 - will rebuild broken (maybe) gcode in vcarve pro - save and try to run.

Is it possible the gcode file is causing the usb disconnect?

Any thoughts on this? And many thanks for the help.

@BMcNanley Doubtful. Try leaving the router turned off, remove the end mill, set Z0 a couple inches about your material or spoilboard and run it again.

thanks ----- running the code on CNC now.

the com6 port stopped a little over an hour into the gcode run.
Leaving both PC and SLB on, I removed the USB-C cable from the SLB and then plugged it back it.
I got the attached Windows notice.

Just finished 2 gcode files attached with no issues -
On finishing both files Longmill returned to XYZ - 0
Only issue (com6 port disconnecting) is the Roughing endmill gcode file. I did delete the Roughing file and rebuild it ---- still disconnected at about 1 hour.

Thoughts?
And thanks again for your help,

@BMcNanley As @chrismakesstuff advised early on, you should open a support ticket with Sienci. Be sure to include the diagnostic file in the ticket.

Thanks gwiki for your help.
I got the roughing toolpath to run ---- I changed out the USB-A to USB-C cable.
I tried a USB-C to USB-C cable which connected, But the Y drive motors did not turn together –

I am confused about the laser and the SLB — I can’t get My head around the last steps of the installation.
I have power to the fans – all the connections seem right.

  1. I am trying to get to the light test in gsender

  2. I am trying to make sure gsender is configured right

  3. When I move from laser to rotary do I need to change gsender firmware values

  4. trying to setup Lightburn — I am in “No machine (Beginner Model)” and can’t get to the place to enter 255

Thanks Again,
Bob
