I use Fusion as a CAM system. I have the basic paid subscription version. Is there a way, other than paying some ridiculous price for the manufacturing extension, to use a rotary axis with Fusion?
While Vectric software (VCarve Pro ?) seems to support rotary operation, I rather not try and learn another program (or spend another bucket load of money)
@Jens There is a way of sorts. Fusion has a wrapping function in a few of the tool path commands which gives some basic functionality, but it requires Y (or X depending on your physical setup) to be static and the rotation is about that axis.
Aside from that it is necessary to get the Manufacturing Extension (~$2k), which as a hobbyist I was not prepared to do.
I have Vectric Carve Pro which I can use for rotary. It is ‘quirky’ but does work.
The relentless increases in costs from AutoDesk for Fusion have become just too much now, and I am actively learning FreeCAD as an alternative. It isn’t as polished, it has some quirks, the visualiser isn’t as nice, but it does have an early implementation of rotary (in the 3D tool paths). I don’t know if there are better software tools for an Engineer cum woodworker who mostly cuts wood and occasionally Aluminium, or Brass - it would be interesting to see what the hive suggests…
Thanks, that unfortunately confirms my suspicion ![]()
I have tried (too many times) to wrap my mind around Freecad but it’s a no go. I hate Fusion with a passion (requirement to always be connected to the web and having to run windoze) and would love to run Freecad.
There is a web tutorial channel on YouTube, MangoJelly that offers a really good, well structured intro to FreeCAD - all he asks is a coffee donation or modest subscription.
Thanks, I will check it out.
