I’ve had my Altmill for just about 1 month now and it’s been working beautifully. Thank you Siensi for developing something that’s actually competing against other machines here.
But my only concern at the moment is I’m noticing some rusting on my guide rails. I’ve been placing two cycle oil on everything to keep it lubricated and clean as possible. I’ve been noticing lately that’s it’s been growing a little. The images below seem worse than it is but it’s not that bad but rust is bad.
Please let me know any advise as to how to prevent or remove it. My altmill is the heart of my small business as I do signage.
Sorry I don’t have any advice on the rust but I do have a question about the sign pieces witch I like very much by the way.
At first I thought the sign was solid but now I’m thinking that the top and bottoms were cut with your mill and then strips, maybe cut on the mill, are bent and welded to form the sides.
However they were made I think they’re cool. Nice work!
Hey Alex, it is recommended by our engineer Daniel to clean off this surface rust with a green scotchbrite then coat the surface of the rail lightly with some oil or grease periodically with a rag.
@kellyz is this oil that is suggested the same as would be used as part of your maintenance? In other words Vactra Way Oil #2 or any other compatible way oil?
Yes you can use that oil, or 3-in-1. We’ve modified the maintenance article to recommend options that are easier to find after seeing people’s feedback.
I wish, materials are very difficult here in Belize. Aluminum is the most common. PVC and plastics aren’t as common so I have to import most of my materials.
I used scotchbrite to clean off the rust when it happened on my rails. I then thinly wiped on Camellia oil. It’s works great. I use it on my SCMS rails as well. I wipe it on about every 3 months - no more oxidation.
Yeah I did that and it seemed to work. I used the 3 in 1 oil to preserve it. I was also wondering if where I am is somewhat coastal so the humidity and salted air must be adding to it. So I bought a tarp to cover it whenever I’m not using it.
