i finally got it all assembled with the exception of securing the .75’ sheet of MDF. i have a 4x8 sheet ‘resting” on the machine. (had no clue it was that heavy, wrestled it out of the truck through my yard and into my shop all by myself)
anyway. what is the general consensus on how to mount it semi permanent like. is there a file that already has the holes set up? im at a stopping point till i figure this out.
@courtney Altmill I’m guessing? Is your mdf directly on the aluminium extrusions? No plywood base between the spoilboard and cross rails?
I have a 18mm Baltic birch base screwed from the underside? The cross rails are pre-drilled. Used Kreg 3/4" pocket hole screws.
The MDF spoilboard (actually slats) is fastened to the base with wide flange machine screws. I used Rampa inserts in the base for the machine screws. T-tracks in between the spoilboard slats. Also have dog holes in the slat.
Not sure about others but I just crawled underneath, pre-drilled a few holes then screwed those in, then repeated for the remainder; Didn’t take 5 minutes.
yes the altmill 4x4. and its just the mdf sheet sitting on the cross beams. the idea of moving that sheet off the machine fills me with dread.
this is probably what im going to do. make sure its centered and then just let the altmill trim it to length with a couple of stands holding up the extra. i cant seem to find much of a fault with this. i know one thing. i will never attempt moving that big of a sheet of mdf by myself again.
I had the same experience - I think when (if) the time comes to replace the base board, I may go with 1/2” or similar to @Chucky_ott ‘s 18mm (0.7-ish) both from a weight and slight height gain.
I have 3/4” base and then 3/4” slats with t-tracks which has only been surfaced enough to be flat and then usually have scrap wood above that (for holding) - so gaining 0.25” or more would be nice as I have run into height issues more than once.
An extra 2 inches clearance sure would come in handy …. but then, if I had the two extra inches, chances are that I would want two more inches.
