Spindles in Europe

Hello there,

I’m still deciding on the Longmill or the Altmill. My biggest concern is the voltage difference. Here (Netherlands, Europe) we have 230V.

For the Longmill everything seems ok, Longmill power adapter works with both volages (110V and 230V). I can use my makita router.

If I go for the Altmill route, I’d like to combine it with a plug and play spindle. So Sienci has the AltMill 2.2KW ER20 Spindle, that requires 220V input. When I connect this spindle here, using a travel adapter like this one:

is it going to work?

I’m aware that for the Altmill itself, I still need to buy a transformer or an alternative power adapter.

If the Sienci spindle is not an option in Europe, is there another plug and play spindle recommended? Also using a transformer for the 2.2KW spindle seems kind of ridiculous to me…

Thanks in advance!

Sven

@Svenned Welcome to the forum. Maybe @Spamming_Eddie can provide some input.

I’m not an electrician so I’d suggest you ask one or Sienci . But…

The 2.2kW spindle uses a power cable with a C13 connector on one end and a NEMA 6-15P connector on the other end. The 15 refers to the amperage required (15A). Instead of using an adapter, I’d probably replace the cable with one that has C13 on one end and whatever you need on the other.

If I were Sienci, I’d start designing my electronics so that they work outside of North America.

I don’t have any first hand knowledge but I’ve seen these two mentioned which may give you something to investigate at least: PwnCNC Spindle System | Plug-n-Play CNC Spindle Upgrade

and spindles/VFDs made by Huangyang.

Hey Sven,

Welkom toe de forum ouwe.

I wouldn’t go for an andapter using powertools. You are introducing a critical point of failure where there is no need for one. Sure it will work and maybe it will work for a good while but you are a wee tickeling your lucky charm with this one. 2200Watt isn’t your run of a mill toothbrush allthough I bet someone of whom we are not gonna tell my name has thought of it. It just isn’t, trust me bro. It’s a fire hazard waiting to bare fruit smack in the middle of a woodshop.

But, you are in luck.. any North American kiddypower cable can be replaced by a grownup one.. like tha chuckster allready pointed out. Just make sure the appliace is grown-up power rated.

Eindelijk een kaaskop op het forum! Yayyy Mocht je meer vragen hebben, mijn longmill draait al een paar jaartjes zonder al te veel problemen.

Wow, thank you guys for your quick help here!

Good to know the spindle is ok to use without a converter! I’ll for sure buy a cable, not a travel adapter.

This makes the Altmill an attractive option!

2200w for the spindle, 500w altmill, 1500w shopvac. I’m going to need two electric groups here!

I am not sure what an electric group is but you might consider having the electronics of the Altmill on a circuit that is separate from either the vacuum or the spindle.

Thanks Jens, a seperate electric circuit is what I meant indeed.

To be absolutely clear, the altmill will still need a convertor of some sorth to reduce the adult power to kiddy power. I use a simple transformer on my longmill. I believe that it costs around €60,- or the likes.

Just look into moving transformers used to power appliances while moving to a place with a different grid voltage. Nothing fancier than that is needed. Just the right input to output voltage and powerfull enough to supply 500Watt continiously (!) and some.

Groeten ût Fryslan!
