I have a fairly high end laptop that I am using to run gSender before I set up a dedicated machine of some kind. I run Ubuntu 24.04 and use the appimage version of gSender 1.4.10.
It takes approximately 30 seconds from the time I initiate gSender before the initial screen shows up and a bit longer for everything to start up.
I am curious if this is normal or if I should be looking for gremlins.
From what I have read, gSender is a fairly light weight piece of software and I would expect it to start up in a matter of 2 or 3 seconds.
Iām running the previous version on a Raspberry Pi 4 with RaspberryOS (Ubuntu/Debian) and it takes about 7-10 seconds to open. Are you running any other applications or is Ubuntu running anything in the background?
If this is after a fresh boot, you can check Startup Applications to see if anything else is slowing the opening process. Also on boot-up, Ubuntu checks for system & application updates unless you have otherwise disabled it.
Thanks, I should be way faster with my laptop. I will go hunting for gremlins.
I wonder if this is a recent change for all AppImages? I also run weekly versions of FreeCAD, and recently, those have also been taking longer to launch.
Interesting thought ā¦ for now I have switched to a winblows machine and it starts up in about ten seconds even though it is MUCH slower box.
Probably not helpful since Iām using apt/deb not AppImage. I just updated to 1.4.10 on my Pi 4. Took 4-5 seconds for the splash/window to open then another 5 seconds to fill-in to be usable.
Thanks - I might try going that route
I have installed the deb version and startup time now is about 8 seconds to the splash screen and another 5 seconds to get the full display screen. A lot better but I will do some more digging ā¦
Thanks
Problem located - seems that my very fast 16 core laptop has somehow morphed into a slug. All my cores are running at 400 MHz !!! This is not a case of throttling due to high cpu temperatures - the computer is running in the 45-55C range.
GSender installed on an older 8 core laptop starts in roughly one (!!!) second.
I have reached out to the manufacturer (Framework) to see what can be done but the computer is out of warranty and based on what I have been able to find, this will be a case of replacing the motherboard
@Jens As you resolved your problem, I have marked your solution and will close the topic.
