Since the 4x8 Altmill is due out shortly, I really want the taller Z height that it offers. I hope the Gantry plates and the gussets are made available separately to purchase as a kit. As it is my Altmill set up as per Sienci with the spindle protruding 4.5” below the clamp could easily drive the bit below the cross beam level so Z axis travel should not be an issue with my existing carriage. Hey @chrismakesstuff, whats the shot of making this a reality??

@gpg When I use my long roughing bit, I set a Z soft limit to prevent just that.
A taller gantry could be useful though, even if the Z travel doesn’t change. You can always raise the bed when you use short bits.

I’m not saying it’s happened but that the existing Z carriage has enough travel to work with the taller gantry plates. It would also allow those with the Vortex to carve larger diameter objects.

Not without changing how the Vortex chuck is mounted - as it sits directly on the x-rail/plate which limits the diameter of stock.
That said, IF the Z was higher, I’m sure we could figure out a different mounting system for the Vortex.
6-8” stock would be fun to play with and I could convert more project from my lathe to the CNC/Vortex.
Oh yeah, forgot its on that plate that attaches to the bed. I don’t have one, but could a riser block be made to get the extra clearance if the X axis gantry was higher?
I’m sure something could be fabricated - ideally in strong aluminum or steel, IMO, to be able to withstand the force from the bit (just like a decent lathe).
@whitewolf lol, I was thinking about this while trying to fall asleep yesterday. Darn cats keep waking me up at 3am every day. I was asking myself how easily and accurately could we mill one on the Altmill. The drawings are available so it’s just a question of increasing the height. Of course, no engineering analysis on the impact of the increased height.
I was not originally interested in this “feature” but after the Vortex discussion on Discord, here, and this idea of a taller gantry - This would be an interesting project that I think Sienci should consider.
Might be a bit niche but only slightly less so than the ATC in my opinion.
Would be a worthy upgrade option if nothing else and I would feel better if Sienci developed it.
