That's not trash! (brass ring)

Funny how some things that would be trash are not because I own a LongMill.

So we’ve been having some trouble with my mother’s pool this year and the last thing to break, stripped threads, was one of the nuts that tighten the band that holds the filter housing together. You can see what I started with on the left and it’s mounted for milling, after cutting off the barrel part, on the right. I like this way of mounting and using center origin for some things because the mill made the pocket so it’s ready to go for milling, as far as X and Y go, after inserting the stock.

I had never worked with any metals on my mill prior to this project and being unsure of the proper settings, I opted to use cheap bits. I used two bits for this project. A cheap eighth inch end mill, five for about $10, if I remember right and a 90° v-bit.

I ended up using the vectric hardwood profile for the bits, with the pass depth, step over and feed rate set to about a quarter of what they were and I didn’t have any problems. Here is the end result, click to remove blur.

This was a fun little project and I ended up with a pinkie ring, size 9.5, from something I would have tossed into the trash before I had my LongMill.

Michael,

That is one nice ring. Ingrave it and it’ll make someone jump in the air.

Next thing you know, you’re cnc-ing jewelry. Awesome result, makes me itch to try something else than wood.

Need to get me that bit deal though. I have not found them that cheap. Not even for a single one, let alone 5. :star_struck:

Not the best quality I’m sure, but check this out, 10 bits for $15.

Another set on that same link is 40 bits for $30. I think they are good for trying new things or for when your learning CNC and don’t want to break the bank with every mistake. That and I got a good result using a cheapo bit.

EDIT: If you search for Genmitsu or SainSmart bits, you’ll find plenty of cheap bits. My first machine was a SainSmart Genmitsu 3018. It was a good machine to get my feet wet but I’d be a sad puppy if I had to go back to it after having a LongMill.

If your interested I posted about some wooden rings, making use of scrap, awhile back.

Nice work. I bought some bits especially for aluminium and have run a couple of cuts. Work great if you modify the settings to suit.
