Altmill Mk2 2x4 - Z-axis motor coupling and motor alarms 6 and 17

I’ve starting getting alarm 6 (Homing Fail) and 17 (Motor Fault) during the homing cycle z-axis travel. Red blinking light on z motor confirms. Reset usually fixes it… only seems to happen on first power up of the day.

I checked the rails, collars, etc, everything slides smooth. But I just noticed the z-axis coupler is spread apart.

Upon further inspection the black collar is completely loose and free spinning. I can rotate it on the threads and if I move it up I can freely push the Z axis up and down into the coupling as you can see in this video: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0cafbpnOaBR7fE0Ek6N60ylNA

Should it be screwed as far down as possible and locked with the set screws as in this photo?

Be aware I don’t have an AltMill so you might want confirmation but I think it’s supposed to be spun down and then the set screw tightened. Here’s what it looks like on OnShape.

And here is the OnShape link for the AltMill Mk2.

I’m a novice at OnShape but if you click the Mk2 2x4 AltMill tab at the bottom you can see the whole machine.

Thanks for that! I didn’t think to look on the CAD model. I’ve gone ahead and set it up like that and we’ll see how it goes.

I’m still getting alarm 17 on the first job attempts after I turn the machine on. It usually happens 2 times, I e-stop soft reset, re-home, and everything is fine. It seems to be consistent. I’m not getting alarm 6 anymore.

Also: the threads on the set screws for the black collar are stripped on 2 of the screws… from the factory. 2mm hex key barely engages at all but works fine on the 3rd screw.

QUESTION: Does everyone have oil pooling at the bottom of their Z axis linear rails?
