I just set up my Altmill Mk 2 and tested functions. I am hearing clicking at about the same point of rotation on the linear rail and cannot figure out why. There are no obvious obstructions.
A previous post (from 2020) mentioned the Acme lock nut as a culprit, but I think that was referring to the Longmill and I can’t find an acme nut on my machine (not that I really know what I’m looking for).
Any ideas?
Hello @Sawdust_Manufacturer, welcome to the group!
On the LongMill which uses a lead screw vs a ball screw the ACME nut is at the end of the lead screw opposite the motor. It is a nut with a set screw and it’s purpose is to keep the long lead screws under tension. The X and Y axes have them for a total of 3 ACME nuts. I’m not super familiar with the AltMill but I don’t think it has them from what I can see. It’s the nut on the right in the pic.
I’m not sure what is causing your noise but thought the ACME nut info would be useful.
Altmill looks totally different so it doesn’t seem like an acme will be to blame. Thanks for clarifying what i should be looking for.

After trial and error with troubleshooting, I figured it out. Turns out the gantry plate was either not tight enough or wasn’t seated correctly to the ball screw nut block.
I removed all four screws and reattached to make sure everything was seated correctly and tightened them pretty hard. Had to do the same thing to the left side after I noticed it had the same issue but couldn’t hear it because the right side was worse.
Purrs like a kitten now, so time to let the chips fly!
