Has anyone ever used a collet extender? I want To carve bowl with a bowl bit however can not go as deep as I would like. Particular around the inside corner.
Usual preface, I’m with PreciseBits. So while I try to only post general information take everything I say with the understanding that I have a bias.
You can use them obviously. But be aware that you need a high quality one as they also add to runout. In this case it’s worse than just the runout’s effect on the cutter as you are swinging a fairly substantial mass around. If there’s too much runout in the collet they are put in or in the extender itself you will beat up the bearing in the spindle/router. So if you are going to do it make sure that you have low runout collets (both ends of the extender) and a good spec’ed extender.
Hope that’s useful. Let me know if there’s something I can help with.
