Gsender 1.6 update question

As I wait on the ATC, I was contemplating upgrading to 1.6. I saw a few folks had issues but I was wondering, in general, if you have upgraded and it is working ok for you. I know that I need to upgrade before using the ATC but Im not sure I want to do it before I add the ATC. Thoughts?

Thx, Tracy

Hey Tracy,

It’s all about the need. I havent updated since 1.21 because that version supplies all I need. If you know you nééd to upgrade before the ATC arrives, well…

Why wait?

You make a good point Eddie

ive updated ,just thought you did when an update presented .

now this is probably ,no defiantly my fault ! but I cant get it to home in the same spot it did before and virtually wont manually jog . hoping to here as ive probably changed something ,but REALLY fubar’d it

I did firmware update and gsender update in prepration for ATC arrival. Seems to be working ok

I had no problem updating Gsender to 1.6 but I did have problems with the firmware. After updating to 20260318 nothing worked. Did not spend any time troubleshooting so I flashed back to original firmware without issues. Will try updating firmware again when I have time.

@Yohahn While waiting for the reply from Sienci, which I am sure will come, did you follow this instruction:

“If you are flashing the SLB EXT (ATC) firmware, you will need to unplug your Spindle cable (At the spindle side, not the VFD side)”

Yes, I unplugged on the spindle side. I did forget to re connect after. The spindle is not a Sienci spindle. It’s a Next Wave spindle and VFD from my last machine. Waiting for ATC.

Because you asked about unplugging my spindle you got me thinking. (always a bad thing) It’s possible the VFD was not powered at time of flashing. Not sure if that has anything to do with firmware upgrade.

A number of the spindle-related EEPROM settings changed location/options in the new grblHAL version since that module was pretty heavily overhauled since SienciHAL release. It’s likely you’ll need to re-configure it after flashing the newer core version.

I did notice it too. I have sienci labs Er-16 spindle and did notice that MODVFD is not included in the firmware. I did have to set it to H100. Is there a list of options that are included in the firmware that was posted?

Previous Spindle option I used was Huanyang V1. This option is no longer in the spindle list. All I see is PMW, PMW2 , and H100 options after updating firmware. The other issue is I am stuck in EStop asserted alarm code 10. I’m assuming I have limits that need to be reconfigured as well. I took pictures of all previous setting and will go through one by one to work this through. It feels like I’m setting machine up for the first time only slightly more familiar with machine settings.

Spoke with the engineers and it’s likely we’ll update the provided new firmware with other spindle options (like modvfd and Huanyang) compiled in - bit of an oversight there.

After flashing, it’s recommended you $rst=$ to reset settings and re-apply your defaults using the Config tool - not 100% if you followed those steps but that might help in your e-stop issue.

Just as an update to this, a firmware build with Huanyang and MODVFD is now available in the resources:

Bam Shakalaka. That solved it. Only need to get laser option.

Laser is now labelled PWM2 - and should be part of it (caveat: I’ve not seen what options were compiled into the new firmware option but that was what was discussed)

The updated firmware does not have a PWM2 in spindle list. Only PWM.

I guess I should have asked if the people with all sienci gear…how is update 1.6 working out for you. Seems the thread went sideways.

Tracy

updated just gsender to 1.6.0 without updating the firmware, machine worked without issue. Was planning on doing the firmware once the ATC got here.

Gsender 1.6 works without issue. I’m going to wait on firmware until ATC arrives as well. Then I will be 100% Sienci. Can’t be more pleased with the Altmill. It’s better than I anticipated.
